multiman vs 1TB WD Scorpio Blue - 1:0 ;(

I've received a brand new WD Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT (2.5'', 1TB, SATA/300). Formatted it using Rogero 4.30 v2.03. Worked like a charm for 3 days...

I copied over 700GB via ftp and usb without any problems but then...
yesterday (during ftp/usb copy) my ps3 has frozen - black screen.
OK hard reset helped, but only 10 times...

Then I got YLOD. But I had my old 120G HDD so after a quick switch everything went back normal again. So again a switch with WD drive and It was working again But only for an hour.... ;(

PS3 shows a message that there is a problem with mass storage.
With my Lenovo laptop via eSata connector everything freezes.
I cant even start the bios to reformat it.

so the question is what happened

1. The HDD was fried in PS3 'coz of extensive nonstop usage - 700GB copied in a row - maybe next time I should limit the transfer rate to lets say 5MB/s?

2. Multiman does something really bad to big hard drives during copy. I've noticed that a games with over 8k files (NeedForSpeed or Naughtybear) have some performance issues during copy via multiman. Even small files are copied really slow especially at the end.

3. It was a faulty unit?

Tomorrow I''ll get a new one as a replacement but I don't want to break it instantly.

I am not sure about this but for future do not copy that much data at once without letting the ps3 rest. I have that much data on my internal also. I would never copy that much at once, you can stress out the PS3 especially if your PS3 is old. Overheat i am sure can happen from that ,if you did not let it rest at all.

I do not think the transfer rate was really the issue just let your PS3 have a break. That is allot of data to transfer continuously.

Hmm why?
PS3 is fine, and the HDD is broken.

PS3 is not a horse, but a computer so it should be able to work 24/7.

And the bigger transfer rate = bigger CPU usage/internal HDD write speed -> more heat.

Just tell us this: how many hours did that 700Gb copy take?

I think copying that amount of data to an USB2.0 HDD takes half a day or something..... if you let your PS3 turned on for half a day with the internal HDD on full speed copying I can imagine your HDD died..... Be glad your PS3 is still alive though that YLOD for a short moment tells you its condition went down a bit.....

Changing copying speed won't help..... copy 50Gb and wait 2 a 3 hours and do the same again and again....

Had the same problem with many hdd's!

The PS3 is not the super computer it was claimed to be. You have to be easy on it and only do a max of 50gb at a time then let it rest. I say use the new hdd as an external and then use the game data tool. Good luck

WTF.... This is rather pathetic.

A PS3 cannot handle data being copied to a 5400RPM drive for "extended" periods of time.

okay I had the same problem.
I don't think it's the large file size BUT the fact that there are sooooo many files. So you have to copy bit by bit manually. I would recommend copy non 4gb files on the usb as it would be faster and the 4gb+ on ftp.
Also what are your cpu and rsx temps?

Also google WDidle tool and use that on your drive and set it to 300 or NEVER

I call BS on anything except a faulty HDD.

I've copied over 1TB lots of times on my PS3 in one go. (over 300,000 files)

small files do take FOREVER in Multiman, by forever, I mean...FOREVER!!!

It's completely normal though and just down to lack of optimization in Multiman and general limitation of FTP too if you're using FTP. Multiman likely doesn't do any caching of files when doing file operations, it's not really a priority though and would take further work from deank to optimize obviously.

This has always been an issue and is an issue on all hard drives, however fast, and on whatever PS3. It's not an actual "issue".

wdidle3 will not help here, that's for turning off head parking when the drive isn't being used. Clearly there will be no head parking going on here.

But it's an ESSENTIAL thing to use on scorpio drives - but that's a separate thing, and related to stopping freezes in games/xmb.

Although, a 1TB Scorpio Blue is rubbish anyway OP and you'd best get rid of it, it will cause crashes in lots of games and slowdown too.

AVOID that POS like the plague.

In fact, avoid ANY Scorpio Blue over 250GB, they have ridiculously conservative spindown times that can't be changed with any PC utility including wdidle3 (yes you can change in HDDTUNE, but it's not persistent - as soon as you turn off the PC, the settings are lost).

ummmm you do know that WD has an autopark of 8sec.... and that will kill the drive faster if not set to a higher amount....

I have had no problems with my WD for loading game or anything of that sort. So you can't just state facts that you haven't tested yourself...
