The US Gun Control Debate Thread

I felt it was necessary to create this thread as the thread giving sympathy to those murdered yesterday, was hijacked by a gun debate.

Now we can factor many, many things, i personally would like stricter gun control in America, but i know at the end of the day it will never stop gun crimes.

If buying guns was illegal in America yesterdays awful tragedy could have been avoided, but at the same time, if a person has the will and want to do something, they will carry it out regardless of law and availability of guns, take yesterdays knife attack at a school in China.

Then we have places like Northern Ireland, its not hard to find an illegal weapon anywhere here, handguns, AK47's, grenades etc, there are strict gun control laws here, we aren't even allowed to buy fireworks, but we can obtain them illegally anywhere, so weapon/gun control laws mean nothing.

I agree with ya @GregoryRasputin .

I feel an individual getting into a vehicle and driving intoxicated is just as bad and those numbers are sometimes overlooked in comparison. It's a no win topic.

I live in Illinois, the most gun restricting state in the union. Sadly, also home to the number one city for murder by a firearm so for me personally, I see how a gun ban doesn't work 1st hand.

The reality of each country is different, so I will not venture opinions on the situation in the USA.

Here in Brazil the acquisition and circulation of firearms was regulated recently and along with that there was ~ 10% increase in murders in the country. It may be only a coincidence, but being the twentieth more violent country in the world, I personally believe that this was a big mistake. Well, I am definitely a pacifist and hate any kind of weapons.

Normal people don´t shoot each other and psychopaths exist in any country. I just think there should be a gun control based on the cultural level of the person who is acquiring a gun (for example, who does not have a minimum scholarity/education obviously is not fit to make decisions with a gun in hand or keep the gun in safety).

No gun law will prevent gun crimes
The only thing it will do is take guns out of the hands of the public and the criminals will still be armed.
You would be defenseless against criminals who can still obtain a gun pretty easily.

Good move im one of the guilty people who has done that and i agree there should be two threads... 1. for the debate 2. for giving condolences to those who have died needlessly in yesterday's massacre. The way i see it political debates/arguments usually arise from situations such as yesterday's tragedy because politics are a living thing no matter how you much you try to skew the emotional "hot buttons" that are pressed. I live in the U.S. so it hits closer to home than say it would for the international posters on these forums...

Stoping the manufacturing of ammunition will not give immediate results in curtailing gun crime but healing society's ills takes a looooooooooong time if there was a concentrated effort (and what a headache it is to unite people for a cause) we could see a drop in violent gun crime/wars but its up to the governments of the world/citizens and gun/ammunition manufactures to say enough is enough we will put aside making money and our paranoia of each other so that hopefully sometime in the future gun violence like certain diseases can be virtually eradicated.

I chose it might help.

Banning will never stop gun deaths as the human race is a piece of crap and gets off from killing things, but it will help reduce the death toll.

Guns should NEVER be in the hands of the public.

We have plenty of armed criminals in England but minimal shootings.

Any membor of the public carrying a Gun (licensed or unlicensed) should be jailed for life.
There is no sane reason for carrying a Gun in public.

If guns were banned world wide and not manufactured, the remaining guns destroyed, we would see an immediate slump in gun related death, but we would see a huge rise in some other weapon related death.

effective or not, strict rules need to be in place. if one person fails to get the gun due to enforcement and it stops him killing someone it is worthwhile
if there were strict rules, there would be less gun crime. there wouldnt be less crime but at least instant deaths could be replaced by treatable injuries

Ok, I agree. Criminals can always get their hands on guns. But it is far more difficult for normal people to get their hands on some guns, here in Europe. I just feel that this weapon law can lower the amount of this incidents like in school by peoples that are autists,.... Why not make it hard for them to get in possession of guns?

Also, why not making guns realy expensive for particular selling and somehow cheaper for law enforcement?
For me there is one simple solution. Taxing weapons.
