i think if you have the appropiate files in the root of the usb device, and you put it in the most right port of the ps3, and you power on the ps3 it will start the update right away.

this is just what i think, but i never had to do it myself, so again we need some confirmation from other people..

EDIT:

5) Once the PS3 has powered off, you can now remove your E3 card reader. Now turn your PS3 on and there will be a red box in the bottom corner of the screen saying you are in factory/service mode!

6) Now, to downgrade, you can put your choice of PS3UPDAT.PUP onto any empty dongle and put the file 1 (LV2DIAG.SELF) on there too. These two files should be in the root of the USB dongle. Power on your PS3 and it will start the downgrade process.
only don't know if you can use the Lv2diag.self from this method, you are not downgrading i guess, but then again i don't know sh*t about this.

You don't go into recovery mode when using the lvl2 files, just plug the usb into the right most port and turn your ps3 on.

Also your usb does not need to be blank, you can leave all your files on it, just put the lvl2diag and a ps3updat.pup on the root and it will work.

Edit: using the lvl2 files will format your internal hdd.

Use file 1 to install firmware.

Use file 2 to exit service mode.

I don't think @toolz is in Factory/Service mode. He stated he was using the recovery menu options.

If you can boot to the xmb, you can use FactoryServiceMode.gnpdrm.pkg (the FactoryServiceMode.pkg is for DEX).
Install the package and run the app.
Then put the step 1 files(rename Rogero_v3.7_PS3UPDAT.PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP) on a usb drive.
Power on the ps3 with the usb in the right most port. Make sure there is not a disc in the drive.
Wait for the firmware to install, takes about 4 or 5 minutes. Then the ps3 will shut off automatically.
Then remove the files from your usb and put step 2 file on the usb.
Put in the right port and power on ps3. Wait and the ps3 will shut off automatically.
Now when you power on ps3 it should boot to the Sony logo and you will have to set date and time etc.

Please note this will format your hdd. So use the backup utility before attempting.

If it fails, the green light will blink continuously. And their will be a log file with error codes for where it failed.
If it works the green light will start to blink when it is almost done and shuts off by itself.

I am sure this works with other files on the usb drive. But I like to use a freshly fat32 formatted usb flash drive.

You didn't answer, What firmware are you on now?
and
Was your ps3 ever downgraded from 3.55+?
This tool will not work on Cobra or True Blue CFW.

If your ps3 has never been downgraded, you can try this with OFW 3.55 also. If it has been downgraded and been dehashed after the downgrade, you can use OFW 3.55.

in this case, if he can only enter the recovery menu then the fsm.pkg won't do any good either, it have to be installed from the xmb and run from there...
