I don't think it will if the game shows up on your xmb.
I myself use an old Whipe Out HD disk with scratches on it. The game shows up but wont start at all. But my backups run fine from hdd.
If you're sure you're BDdrive is shot check this thread :

I really want to get into the ps3 scene, but it's a turn-off when half the time a game won't work as-is.
..."I really want to get into the ps3 scene, but it's a turn-off when half the time a game won't work as-is" maybe you should get into the scene, to figure out what the problem is?
It seems you set the baseline for game compability on the PS3's according to just your own experience... I have had success with perhaps 95-97% of the games I try without anything needed to be done.
Hint: If you got into the PS3 scene, you would propably figure it was because of your broken bluray drive and games not being able to run discless

on some fat ps3 the drive has got dual laser in the drive . 1 for reading bluray games and movies and the other laser to read dvd, music,ps2 games . and the sounds of it the bluray laser has gone

so iver he needs to clean the laser and if that dont work replace it ,
the logic board is fine ,if it wouldnt he wound'nt be able to run any homebrew eg mutiman etc

dual laser here

single laser here

The title to this thread is misleading. It should be about why is the PS3 hardware so unreliable. My CFW is completely reliable. It does everything OFW does and whole lot more that it doesn't. I have 100% game compatibility.

60gb PAL phat backwards compatible. I didn't actually know anything was wrong with the bluray drive until just now, since it read cds/dvd's fine, and for online I have a slim to read discs. I'm trying to format a usb stick with ps3gen so I can use BDEMU but it throws a "format failed, use other tool" message at me. However, with rebug, two games that didn't work before, work fine now, even without bdemu.
