Can you remove the E3 flasher after downgrading?

Can you remove the E3 flasher after downgrading and then apply the jailbreak or do you need to keep the flasher at all times?

I have gone through a couple. Usually from the ribbon ripping, from not carefully uninstalling it.
I would get a couple extras. I try to keep a spare just in case.
