e3 backup problem.

Hey guys installing the xmas present! A e3 flasher for my ps3. Anyways Im getting to the make a backup on the e3 where Number 3 is up and the rest are down.

I get this error on my micro SD

start logging...
backup PS3 BIOS.
fail to initialize PS3 BIOS.

Any Ideas? I already updated it with the e3 file 2023 01 05 update.bin

I did the #1 #2 down the rest up for the update, then this was the next step, now im stuck. I read a few other posts about holding the SD card slot shut, but no luck yet.

Your clip is not seated properly.

100% chance that is what is wrong.

Make sure that the clip is sitting flush on the board, that no resistors are close to the NOR chip keeping it from sitting flush (you may need to sand down clip on side where those 2 resistors are to make it work), and try taping foam/coins/cardboard on clip to keep a constant pressure on clip.

Some hints about using the E3 Flasher with the Nor Clip:

The Nor Clip should be seated firmly over the Nor chip, but before you apply pressure to have it clipped right, always make sure the pins are correctly aligned or you will risk damaging the Nor chip.
Then when you clip it right, there must be no space at all between the Clip Plastic sides and the PS3 board, it must be completely straight and flush with the board.
What I do is: I align the clip over the pins from one side of the Nor chip, then I start applying pressure while clipping the other side too, then I press over the 4 corners of the clip with 2 fingers in an X shape motion.
At this point the clip should look completely attached to the chip, so i don't move it anymore and I apply a piece of masking tape over the Flat Cable and not the Clip itself (because you risk moving the clip again and losing the perfect grip).
N.B: always make sure you have the Clip orientation correct, the nor chip have a small round mark over Pin number1, use this point to attach the clip correctly.
Then, Turn on the PS3, if all good the Leds on E3 board should start flashing Blue / toggling Right/Left indicating it is in stand-by mode.

I just got done trying to do it again, no luck same result.

Although I did that before you guys posted! Ill try both methods. I haven't been cleaning it with any alcohol so I thought that might have been the problem.

On top of the other method of looking at the pins, I don't know why I did'nt look at that, ill add some foam. Do you know about how think it should be or what works?

Well third try I added some cardboard to the back of the chip so when I flip the motherboard over It wobbles just a little because its balancing on the cardboard, but when I tighten it down its all good. Still no luck same error code.

Maybe later Ill try buying some of the alcohol cleaner and some sandpaper. See if that helps.

I tried to look at the pins and stuff when putting the NOR clip on, but I can't see it. It snaps in pretty good and it feels sturdy. All the pins are in good shape, nothing bent or anything.

Oh I was watching the rest of the video and noticed he used a P3GO is this something I need to have?

Do you see 2 little resistors on one side of the NOR chip? Most likely that is causing it not to connect good. It may look flush but as long as your clip hasn't been modded to fit around those then you will have problems.

And yes, cleaning it with alcohol will make a difference.

You will need any dongle that has the PSGrade Hex on it to enter service mode.

I use a PS3key because it was the cheapest that I could find (about $9) but you can also use the E3 Card Reader, PS3Break, PS3Go, etc. but yes you will need a method for entering service mode.

Ok thanks for the heads up, I just ordered the ps3key 9.99, but 8 bucks for shipping! haha. It will give me a few days to pick up some stuff I need.

A new HDMI cord to test ps3 in my Den, instead of having to hook it up in another room.

Some Alcohol,

Maybe Sand paper. I looked at the board and theres room all around the clip and the NOR so nothing is actually touching it. I will take some pictures next time I take it apart.

Any suggestions on what to use incase the cardboard doesnt work to hold the Clip on the NOR card?

Also I notice the E3 card is really only held on by the motherboard attachment, so if you pull on the e3 unit it would come unplugged. Is there a fix for this, or just be careful?

No there is no fix for keeping the flasher from unplugging......it was a bad design flaw.

There really is no set method for what to use to keep pressure on the clip, I used 4 pennies/foam from the E3 flasher box, and taped them to the clip so that there was moderate pressure being kept on the clip when the console was closed back up.

As for the resistors (they look like pins)

And here is a post from @playerkp420 showing how he did it. http://www.ps3hax.net/showpost.php?p...1&postcount=18

The flasher is designed to plug into the hdd bay, as if it were the hdd. It was intended for permanent installation.

Here are some pics of how I tape the clip down. And I put the motherboard back in the metal casing.

2 more failed attempts, I cleaned with the alcohol and tried shaving some plastic off, but after looking at the other pics, It looks like I could go a lot further on the trimming. Ill upload a pic, sorry the pics are not great I can't seem to focus it that great.

You wont ruin the clip as long as you keep the cutting/sanding on the edge of the clip. As long as you don't cut near the pins you will be fine. Just take your time and go little by little until you can see that the resistors are no longer touching the clip and you will be golden.
