Noob Question...comedians need not reply
Look...first off....i'm an experienced forum member in many, many forums and offer advice on different things not PS3 related. I know how forums (and members with lots of posts) work...so i'm not an idiot and I don't treat noobs as idiots either since we've all had to learn at some point or another...so i'm hoping I get the same respect here.
I know how to look at sticky's first to get what i'm looking for. But sometimes the sticky's don't necessarily answer the exact question you want to ask...hence the reason for this. I have PS3 cech 2501B....the firmware was (mistakenly) upgraded to 4.31. From what i've read, the cech 3000 series cannot be downgraded. Nor can anything be done about 4.31 firmware with software...only hardware manipulation. I haven't seen anything regarding the 2500 series...if its there, I havent looked hard enough and missed it. My question is...can I do software downgrade because its a 2500 series. If not, can I format the drive and install an earlier firmware version as if it were a new drive or is it stuck on the mainboard in its own version of the "bios" and there's nothing I can do about it. Can you flash the bios? If there is something I can do, I would appreciate either a link or some direction on how to do it....that way, if it works, I can do my part in this community and share it with others when they ask without offering smarky remarks. cheers!! ![]() PS...sorry, to make it clear, I am very computer "tech" oriented. However, I have never attempted to "jailbreak" any systems I have. Last edited by weegee; 01-01-2013 at 02:38 AM. |

First of all you need to see what the stock firmware was when new.
If it is 3.56 or lower you can jailbreak. Jailbreak involves a flasher as you are above 3.55. The flasher would be either an e3 or pro skeet. Hope this helps

I was hoping with an older unit (2501b) a reformat of the drive and installing a new (old) os image on that drive would have done the trick...but apparently that isn't going to happen. From what I understand thats not the case...will read on...cheers! |

Well, here is what I say:
The 2 best places to get accurate information about this are 1) PS3DevWiki 2) #ps3downgrade IRC Channel, but you must be logged on to the EFNet IRC servers to see it. Of course you can also get a little bit of help on forums here and there... but quality varies considerably ![]() Also, I have to add that neither the E3 or Progskeet that mrc alluded to are particularly great devices. They are way overpriced for what they are, and the extra features are pretty unnecessary and pretty worthless. If you are smart (most people here aren't), then the one to go for is the Teensy 2.0++ from PJRC. Which is $24 + $1 to order the optional voltage regulator (which you would definately need, but nobody ever tells you beforehand). Of course if you head over to either 1) or 2) sources you can find out all about the Teensy... no-one really talks that much about it here on these forums. The only other advice I will give to you here: You really shouldn't attempt downgrading until you have become really absolutely sure you can pull it off. Otherwise it is simply not for you. Downgrade service: Most people will not offer because hey, who would want to be standing there explaining why they have bricked some-one else's PS3 ? Buying pre-jailbroken PS3: Some people may offer on ebay. Of course you should see in person what you are buying before parting with any money. |

It's easy not to brick and easy to fix. Here's a grand idea, don't flash without a proper dump.

My thought was to make a clone of the existing drive and try to manipulate the cloned drive. If it didn't work, I could always put the original back in. I'm use to doing that with pc's so that's why I thought I could do it here. But I do not know enough about the PS3 hardware. Thanks to all for the leads. |
