You would need the private keys, and the private keys only to make a cfw working.
An other option is an exploit, but that's not an easy option as it's very difficult to find an exploit. @Isleofdoom

However it's likely that the detection can be circumvented, so as long as you check to make sure it's safe before you upgrade then you'll be fine. They are likely to keep wanting to sell them, so they'll produce updates. For CFW we could have another long gap if Sony aggressively try to protect their firmware again. It probably is very similar to the E3key one in concept and it'll just be a race to whoever can fill in the details first of the most wanted features. I imagine that they've both had it working using drive keys obtained using CFW for a while. Last edited by smf; 01-10-2013 at 02:43 PM. |

Only reason this would be any interesting, is if they somehow managed to extract the drive key without you being on a custom firmware first. A hardware solution that is the ODE, for instance. That way even people on non-jailbroken/non-downgradable consoles could play "backups". And let's not fool ourselves, that is what the vast majority of people on jailbroken PS3s cares about. Hell, even homebrew developers on this forum take screenshots of them using "backups" from torrent directories to test things.
I don't see many people, already on CFW/DEX consoles, willing to shell out money for this. Those can always play the newest games as it is, and have homebrew without the need to jump through hoops. What good does that do them? Oh, being able to be on OFW. Granted, that's nice. But how long will that last, though? Are we sure Sony cannot push out a firmware update and put an end to this, and simultaneously console ban you as well, as an added bonus? Then what? You are stuck on OFW, unless you hardware downgrade again. I fail to see the point of this. If anything, if you think about buying this for some stupid reason (unless 3k/4k models can be done out of the box, ODE only), wait a few months, 3-4, I would say, to see how it develops. Whether Sony can/has already banned it, or if it's good to go for the long run. And as far as the infantile bashing of the device goes: It's a hardware based solution. Not a re-drm device. More Flasher than dongle. What do you want them to do? Let you download the hardware? Even if they were to tell you exactly how it's done, all it would do is make other companies produce clone devices. Those still would cost money, and, by those companies shaving off costs, and bringing you a less reliable hardware, save you a few bucks. Or you would have to build one yourself, which would end up costing the same. Or even more, if you were to include the man hours building the device. If it's the principle, well... welcome to the real world, where people have to pay bills. Sorry if you don't have a skillset that makes you rake in more money with less work. |

Don't be analy pedantic
You can play backups/pirates homebrew and PSN all on the latest MFW. You also need to be on CFW to get this Chode working in the first place.... |

However, we both agree, that this is not enough. I even called it pointless myself. I went as far as to say, that nobody on a jailbroken PS3 would want to buy it. I am just being fair, and don't enjoy seeing a witch hunt, I guess. |
