Why Does Linux Suck for Gaming?
Valve is obviously moving towards Linux because they do not trust the Windows platform. The Steam Box will most likely be running a custom-made distro of Linux created entirely by Valve, likewise, the Steam software is already available for gamers running Linux on their desktop machines. Still, I hear so many bad things about gaming on Linux. From what I've read, and from what I've heard, Linux has very bad driver support for NVIDIA graphic cards and games that run via Wine constantly lag. I want to like Linux but if I cannot properly game on it... Well it just isn't happening. Period. Will gaming on Linux ever be worth installing the OS? I am mainly referring to Ubuntu but I suppose all distros suck as well -- for gaming.

Gosh in a perfect world it should not be the case as for using wine good luck with that i mean it sure is possible but its like dell printers on linux or something heck if u took the time and wrote your own driver you can get a dell printer to work in linux but why would you do that? Just an example...while i have played major releases on the os it is always a hassle tbh with that said ubuntu wubi all the way make a 20gb partition then you have best of both worlds it is not going to change anytime soon and as an os ubuntu is very useful for many many reasons i use it for mediatomb superior imho in terms of streaming 1080mkv to ps3 compared to anything else i have tried...data recovery is very easy in linux when someone hoses a windows hd i could go on and on really and it is one of those things the more you learn linux you just become better at understanding computers period...
But yeah major pc releases can be dodgy... Emulation is fun though... So there is gaming just current mainstream releases get dodgy though if you put in the time almost anything can be made to work but why if you had an easier route? Remember for me the goal is fun and gaming lol as for why well gosh so many important pcs run linux and as you point out it makes no sense if someone is making linux like software to push their games...it is a sad sad state of affairs linux has not been like allowed...true story ms was banning 360 gamertags with the word Linux in it i mean cmon it might be because corps are afraid of how linux could cut into their profits or be a tool to help the savages become evolved and the nobility does not desire this its really terrible i applaud brazil for adopting linux in gov and business but in this country not looking good basically being hassled by ms oh well just my two cents Last edited by SeanP2500; 01-10-2013 at 07:27 PM. |

If gaming sucked on Linux, I don't think Valve would waste its money and time making it happen.

Gaming sucks on linux (lack of games) because so much money has been poured into making games run on microsoft's direct3d api. now with steam on linux and mac you will see more and more games running on openGL. also steam doesn't distrust windows
@Annelies
it's all about market share and linux is just one more place to make money. also the GPU drivers(AMD and Nvidia with nvidia generally being better) suck for linux because there are so many different flavors of it. unity, gnome and others and a butt load of different distros.

Integrated GPU? don't like that a bit.
If this *pandora's box* fails with graphics and you can't upgrade it, **** this **** seriously.

Wisdom mode = *Only time will tell*. Love steam tough..but idk. I don't know about next-gen consoles, only know that the future of gaming this year PC users have the upper hand.

Technically, GNU/Linux does not "suck" for gaming. GNU/Linux is not the issue here, it is the games them selves.
Games are written/tested/released on the windows platform, as such they will work perfect for Windows.. (well, mostly, they usually have bugs still lol) - They are then being forced to run through "Wine" on GNU/Linux which adds additional load to the system, and obviously compatibility issues, as such may cause bad FPS and other issues. Games which are written and compiled natively for GNU/Linux usually run pretty much perfectly. Recently Nvidia released a driver update which has drastically increased the performance of Graphics on GNU/Linux. In most cases you can get games to run perfectly on GNU/Linux as well, if it's a Windows platform game you usually have to hack it around a little to get it to run smoothly, personally I hack things around a lot to make the run perfectly. I have games such as Assassin's Creed 1 through III running on highest graphic settings just fine. But then GNU/Linux is the ONLY operating system on my computer, as such no windows, as I refuse to agree to Microsoft's TOS and Licence Agreement's as such will not use their software :-). So when it comes to having to hack things around a little to make things work, I do not mind. I run CentOS 6.3, However it is far from stock, I run the latest graphics drivers from Nvidia, the latest kernel from kernel.org and a lot of other "tweaks" and "modifications" while leaving most of the applications as CentOS 6.3 stock or from EPEL repositories and have got a surprisingly stable system still :-) And I don't have that crud Gnome 3 or KDE :-P (Xfce, lightweight, allows me to play games easier, and get work done without it constantly being in my face and bogging the system down - I prefer a minimalistic desktop..) Anyhow's, as for native games, usually they can be run pretty easily and without any hacking around or issues. Just my 2c |

Most games are not created to run on Linux. Most computer users do not use Linux. Therefore, GPU drivers and game support will be lacking for Linux. Poor drivers will lead to poor performance. The minority will suffer. Linux itself is a really good OS that's really lightweight. If drivers were up to par and a game was built to run on Linux, you would see high performance.
