U.S. Cities Relying on Precog Software to Predict Murder: Threat level.

MINORITY REPORT (2002) Trailer - YouTube

I always liked this kind of police/sci-fi etc or cyberpunk genre (if you can call this that way).

You may remember minority report (tom cruise) where a precog (along with other two) were used to catch a felon BEFORE he could commit a crime.
(Well the story is pretty ****ed up but the argument seems legit to me).

Now (today as i type this letters) some U.S cities are using a new crime-prediction software:

To create the software, researchers assembled a dataset of more than 60,000 crimes, including homicides, then wrote an algorithm to find the people behind the crimes who were more likely to commit murder when paroled or put on probation. Berk claims the software could identify eight future murderers out of 100.
Yeah you read it right, this is no joke.
And here is the interesting part:

The software parses about two dozen variables, including criminal record and geographic location. The type of crime and the age at which it was committed, however, turned out to be two of the most predictive variables.

“People assume that if someone murdered then they will murder in the future,” Berk told the news outlet. “But what really matters is what that person did as a young individual. If they committed armed robbery at age 14 that’s a good predictor. If they committed the same crime at age 30, that doesn’t predict very much.”
Like i said i like this on police/futuristic/sci-fi movies but this being used on reality is a little too much for me.
If a near future they will relay 100% on this kind of software then the *precogs* of that movie will be the *soul* of this upgraded (and possible flawed) software.

I've been reading about predicting crimes for a couple years since that kind of stuff pops up at www.scienceblog.com.
