Yes, it is. In case if you brick your console, the console won't stay on. So this method is used.

Yes very sure the console is out of FSM, as I did get it back to the 3.55 XMB and there was no Red image saying FSM.... Also the console won't stay powered on long enough to read anything from a usb stick. I have tried putting the file on a pendrive to get myself out of FSM but of course this doesn't work.

I suspect that a previous post is correct and it is a blown fuse. I need try the method of connnecting a PC PSU and ruling out the PS3 power unit and then testing every fuse on the motherboard. Any suggestions on what and how to check these would be welcome....

Most likely you're bricked and you didn't solder tristate right. Try doing this:


using your hands to hold the wire WHILE switching on the PS3 after attaching the power supply and the fan but not the Bluray and the back metal plate and see if it still stays on.

I am prety sure the PSU in my slim is ok. I wasn't able to hook up a PC ATX power supply as I wasn't willing to mess with the 5.5v 4 plug lead from the PS3. I did however get a volt meter over the main large pins and they had 11.96 volts and the other small 4 pins had 5.5v. These seem perfectly inline what what is documented about the PSU.
The Fuses and Thermal cutouts on the mainboard are very small but was able to test most of them and they seem ok.

I did notice that where the 12v two large prongs on the mainboard. When taking off the PSU, the movement acts as a lever and this may cause a breakage somewhere in this area. The Standby button gets a 5.5volt feed, but Hypothetically if there was an issue with the 12v supply, would that give the same symptoms as I am experiencing. I.e 5.5volts to the Standby button which is ok so light comes on, but when the PS3 switches on the PSU and the 12 volt supply isn't reaching parts of the mainboard would that cause it to power off?

if you solder a wire between NOR Tristate and GND and it does not halt your console, then this is a hardware problem.
And sorry for telling you that your console have a YLOD but for Slim console.
This is a common problem specially if you have a JSD-001 board.
You must reflow the RSX chip or reball it to fix your problem

normally the ps3 would go back to a blinking red standby led when the 12V fails.
but these 25xx boards, they act strange lol.

you say that you measure 12V on the prongs, if the console shuts off and the light goes off is the 12V still on the prongs?

off topic, do you have the board taken apart?, i could use some high quality pics from the power/eject connector area. (both sides of the board)

i'm trying to find out the pinout for that connector, but without any decent pics it's impossible.

u need to test the fuses onboard with a meter not just look at them (thats how ur post has read)

a reflow/reball of the rsx is in order.
