Any help with disk drive?

Here is my problem:

1)If a disk is in the drive, downloaded games/psn store/netflix will go to black screen
2) if drive is empty, downloaded games/psn store/netflix will load normally
3) ps3 will not recognize either bluray or dvd disks when inserted.

Im willing to try anything, though the cheaper route the better for my income. is there a reputable repair guide to help me with this, im not finding anything with google that isnt sketchy or 4 years old? Thanks for all your help in advance.

I'm in the US, on ofw 4.31 and fat ps3. Thanks for the quick reply.

Do I need to replace the laser or the entire drive? I only ask because I'm trying to figure this thing out. If the BR laser went out, wouldn't it still read DVDs, because from what I understand there are two different lasers in the drive. Of course I know very little so may just be pulling this out of my butt. Thanks again.

@roseysdaddy , you should always start by replacing the laser, it's a common problem, you probably can do it yourself, but i never looked into it myself.
i have a dead laser myself but i just don't care.

Just had drive start go out on my fat 80 gig the other day. Weirdest failure ever. Something in the lift assembly for the laser and motor broke.discs would go in and come out fine.just wouldn't spin up. Dismantled the ps3 top and drive metal housing and rigged the platform up and can now now play games really ghetto till my new drive gets here.

Yeah you could just buy a new laser and replace it. I did mine on my first try without instructions and my blu-ray is working fine.

Am I just taking crazy pills? The bluray laser fails and that would also make the DVD last fall as well? Aren't these two sperate components?

We are not there to diagnose your problem. You need to take the steps to figure it out.

First thing I do is:

1. Check that it accepts and ejects discs.
If yes it must be getting power.
2. Check and see if any apps or PSN games work.
If yes, your blu ray logic board it good.
3. Clean the lens. Then check if it plays discs.
If yes, you fixed it.
If no, replace the laser lens.
If you power it on with the top off, you can see if the laser is lighting.
4. Still doesn't play discs after changing the lens, it may be the little motor that spins the drive.

If the laser is bad, it won't spin the disc. The laser tells it the motor it sees a disc and then the motor spins it so the laser can read it.

You can Google "How to diagnose a faulty blu ray drive" for a more detailed instruction.
