I don't get the overall idea for ps4, from leading company in tech innovation suddenly they're building "next gen" with mobile parts, a what is even funnier, build in cpu graphics. What sucks even more is ram. I know that programming consoles is different , and there is much less overall overhead, but 4 gb is going to be to little for open world games in the future... Epic wanted at least 8gb, carmack wanted 8gb, crytek wanted even more. What sony does ? F**k them !
They pay even funnier low prices for this ram chips in bulk.... And even better at least 512mb-1gb will be reserved for the system. As far as I can tell, adding ram would be the CHEAPEST way to increase games quality, immersion, overall feel... But again we will have beautifull gfx, but it's going to be repetitive, lacking real world variety, with bushes and buildings will pop out in front of our faces....
Coming back to GPU, in ps3 they could develop chip with nvidia that outperformed two 6800 in SLI ( which was dream config back then), and now they're using mobile gpu, which cannot pull battlefield 3 in FULL HD, max detail, 60 fps, and even doesn't come near today's high end gfx cards. Before someone start complaining, yes I know programming for consoles is different, and bf3 ported to ps4 would run even better than 60 fps even in 3D. But in four years the games on "nex gens" will have 24+ fps framerate plus hilarious draw distance...
We were astonished by jump gaming made with ps3 and x360, I fear that with ps4 and x-whatever we will get the same games, gameplay, feel, only with better pc-like graphics....
I can only wish that this info is pure bull****. But bearing in mind Sony's poor financial condition. I think they're aren't going to pay for every ps4 sold, as they did with ps3, which costed much more than it was in stores.
BTW sorry for my english, it's not my native language

pfff, haven't they learned with the PS3 when it comes to memory? 4GB is not enough for a console on the long run, the PS3 could have been much better if it had 1GB of mem (or hell even 256MB more would already suffice), and now they're gonna make the same mistake again.. the NextGen console of Microsoft will have at least 8GB of memory..

Well, we're *****ing about same thing :D Sony will have 1gb for OS, so 3gb is for games. X-whatever will have 8 gb overall, with 3 for OS, so it gives 5 for games... What thing is unknown, if ps4 will not have specialised graphics ram ( And it won't have as it uses APU - styled solution, and GDDR5 as ram) then you have to leave at least 1 gb , 1 and half gb for graphics. SO IT LEAVES 1500 MB FOR GAME...
As for ps3, ps3 with 512 mb ram, would kill x360 so fast that ps3 would oversell ps2... Imagine GTA IV running on ps3 like a dream, uncharted with open world etc...

I'm concerned about the reliability of these future systems. I'm aware these chips are designed with effeciency and low temps in mind, but ALL chips on one die? once the systems are possibly into their 2nd or 3rd years, definitely a lot of fails in the 4th year.

Just as they start to reduce die sizes and costs, and developers begin to understand and push the hardware, the first batches will not be to keep up, possibly even the more efficient models which follow (very similar to his gen)

Microsoft dropped a major on the current gen system, so I'm inclined to think they'd go overboard with reliability tests. Sony systems also had a very high fail rate, they just denied it and threatened anyone who tried to publicise it.

Sony are going to be as unpredictable as ever. They are short on funds and so will try to keep costs as tight as possible, however, skimping to much could be to their detriment.

The PlayStation brand still has a large draw to it, however, Sony have spent a great deal of effort alienating the very people drawn to this brand.

Forgot to say, although the ps3 was quite high spec when it was released, a lot of that power goes towards an inefficient os and even more towards DRM/ encrypt/ decrypt/ etc.

I don't know too much about the Xbox, but would assume it would be similar, but probably more efficient.

These next gen systems are going to contained DRM and encryption algo. Never before seen on a household device, the scene will still tear them to pieces though.

Isnt the next Playstation rumoured to be using GDDR5 instead of like its Microsoft counterpart that will be using DDR3?
