Yay DIY
Hey ps3hax, got a floozy for you, and me.
I have a CECHL01 ps3 that I bought as dead, and I wanted to fix it. I don't know the FW cause the seller didn't tell me, and it wont load a screen before it does that ever so vague three fast beeps and blinking red light. I started poking around on the inside, and it looks like some on futzed with it before me, because there's a rather ugly non professional solder ball near the front on the board, doesn't look like it's on any circuitry but fact remains. I attempted a reflow on it in hopes that worked, no avail, which makes me think some one got to it before me and screwed it up. I don't think the PSU is bad because it starts the boot process just fine until it gets ready to post then the beeps and malfunction. So what should I do, or what are recommendations. I can't reball the chips because I don't have the resources, thanks in advance Also, for repairing the IHDs, what glues will i need arctic silver adhesive, ceramic, or alumina for the RSX, I need a reply to this ASAP Well I found the problem, or possible problm, when I was taking the IHS off there was a micro resister that apparently came off, I was being careful not to break anything, then this little chunk falls off, and I think that might have been the problem from day 1, as all it took for it to pop loose was it barely being touched by one of my tools, so is the whole thing trash or can i still make it work These are the pictures of where the part broke off, and the part itself, so is this still repairable ps3 or just give up on this one and cut my losses Last edited by AdrickSkarsgard; 01-20-2013 at 09:58 PM. |

it should not stop the ps3 from working unless the solder is shorting the two traces... for the fat ps3 ylod is almost always due to overheating (loose solders). but a short on the board or a broken fuse will also result in ylod. EDIT: it's a ver-001 board, and it's a tantal capacitor, can't recall the value muself, can be anything from 47 microFarad to 330 microFarad Last edited by Mr.Dutch; 01-21-2013 at 10:58 AM. |

Thank you Dutch, I appreciate the input. So it's looking like it may need to be reballed then, after attempting a re-flow, which I know is a temp fix, and still no response. I was poking around here on the forums, and thought it might be a corrupt flash or something, but I don't know the likely hood of that because the unit starts to boot up, then it just stops with three fast beeps.
Personally I do not have the equipment for reballing right now, nor any money to pay some one to do it. |

about the capacitor, i said before that the ps3 should work fine without it, but since it's a tantal one im not sure anymore. they are on the board to keep the power stable from the various voltage regulators. EDIT: forgot to add picture. ![]() |
