lol yeah it does look pretty plain and gay, i thought it was just old old one, this is what i did mate, i ordered a new drive from ebay, it came with a board, i have no idea if it works though, but i just put the whole drive in including the logic boards and it did the exact same thing as when i change it to my logic boards from the original, now i know they need to be married but isnt that just to play games, surely it would still suck my disc in would it not? and i havnt managed to get my hands on as multimeter yet bud, just ordered a new ribbon cable, what would be youre first thought of the problem

so to answer youre question yeah it does the same thing wether my original logic board on the new drive or the logic board it came with neither suck the disc in, man i really would love to test the main board like you said, now in case i do get a hold of one, is there any risks when using multimeter? can i short something if wrong points?

thanks for all youre help

since both boards act the same then it's no use to measure on th board itself, look at my last picture and just measure on the connector.
i don't think the power cable itself will fail easily, there's more chance that the ribbon cable have some damage.

i still remember a user that had to make a bypass on the mainboard because of missing power at the connector.

It sounds like the disc sensor cable/connector is broken or the cable is damaged/not fitted correctly. It's the tiny connector with the 2 wires that connect at the edge of the logic board.

The disc sensor will detect the disc and try to suck it in. If this is damaged you would have to force the disc in by hand because the drive can't see the disc. You probably know all this but just in case...

I'm also not sure if the wrong logic board on a drive will accept discs. I remember a post from a BR Drive guru called 'Mark Webber' about this. I would remarry the logic boards and check that. If you can't, i'll swap an old logic board i have over onto my 60gb and see what happens.

when you swap a complete drive, everything works, except the ps3 won't show anything on the xmb.

also he mentioned the blue led blinks when trying to insert a game, so disc sensor is fine... trust me.

yeah the blue light does blink when the system is in standby it also turns on when inserting disc just doesnt try to take it, theres still something i dont understand though, the drive will make a noise if i hold down the ejct button, i can hear a whirling noise like the motor is trying to do something, i tried the new ribbon cable and still the same, only thing left to do is try get a multimeter from somewhere but then f i did and found out something was wrong would a amateur like me be able to do anything about it? or am i pretty much screwed now? i can still play demos so at least my ps3 isnt totaly dead but it may as well be, i know you can buy games from psn, i hope ill be able to buy that new ps3 exclusive game by naughty dog, forget the name, probably too big to download though. pretty gutted about this

i'm not 100% sure, but i do know the controller chip for the eject/insert motor and laser motor, uses two voltage to work, 12V and 5V.
i know the eject/insert motor uses 12V, but if the laser motor is using the 5V then it all makes sense.

pressing the eject button for 6 seconds is force eject, but because of the missing 12V nothing happens.
pressing the eject for longer then 12 seconds is drive reset, so probably you hear the motor from the laser resetting to the correct position.

just my 2 cents.

btw you would probably be able to somehow fix it yourself, but it will be a ghetto fix.

hey i got no problem with a ghetto fix lol, im guessing id be trying to feed it the 12 volt from somewwhere else then? ive done this sort of thing before with 360, somthing back when i was connecting whisper max fans i had to use a 12 volt source, ive flashed my drive and am pretty good at following instructions, not that flashing drives is hard though i did it back when it was a bit more difficult than it is now. i take it mulitimeter is the ONLY find out, can i try the 12 volt theory anyway or would i need a multimeter or that, any tutorials on what id need to do, im willing to try the ghetto way, like whenever
cheers

gonna check google

i suppose its a good job i got a 360 and gaming pc or i really would be gutted, i really wanna play that new ps3 exclisive though, i only really used this ps3 for watching blu rays as i have my 360 for console games but the ps3 has got brilliant exclisives so

i would first try to measure if we are right that the 12V is missing from the mainboard connector.

EDIT: @playerkp420 is probably still pissed about the gay meter joke.
i think he owns one.

i was thining of doing the way you said to pull the ribbon cable leave the power cable in the drive and test points 1 and 2 on the power cable, when i find a multimeter that is
