The fact that the perpetrators had gained access to sensitive information that belonged to millions of people that trusted sonys "secure" online services/system is unacceptable regardless of whether they used that info for fraudulent purposes or not and regardless of whether sony cant find evidence that they did so.

Then why did the investigation that took place by ICO conclude that the attack could have been prevented if there systems were up to date?

You don't know much about debit cards, my main bank account is a debit card associated account, i keep a decent amount of money on it, so if i have, then im sure many of the other 40+ million PS3 owners do too.

The reasoning behind the PSN attack, was because of how Sony treated GeoHot, so yes the PSN hack WAS Sony's fault....

negligence is negligence. failing to keep up to date with security was no accident. it was purposeful neglect. they chose not to keep things secured by protecting our information with sufficient security
even if nothing was taken they failed in their duty to protect their customers. that alone demands action as it does in any other sector that fails those who put their trust in them.

in the UK peoples debit cards are charged by scammers everyday, many by small amounts so the owners do not even notice so its not just major credit cards that are an issue

I agree their security system was flawed because the hack was stupid to begin with, taking the whole network down because of how they treated Geohot is ridiculous. All I am saying is the 250K they are paying, is probably more than what people lost out of the hack, so to demand more, is insane.
