*Knocks on his head............* Yes, it's turned to wood.

Just which part of this are you failing to understand Oh Mighty Talker of Drivel? (Google it)

The outcome of their lack of care and commitment to their customers has absolutely nothing to do with how much money was or was not stolen, but the fact that innocent peoples accounts and personal details were so easily obtained due to their abysmal security measures.

The insanity you are so eager to mention is that you fail to understand that Sony, and similar organisations, have a duty to give the best security that current technology allows.

One SINGLE penny, or one SINGLE persons details is too much to have been stolen because of Sony's security, and if you cannot see that fact then you are an imbecile.

it was flawed "because" the hack was stupid?

you cannot lay blame on the hack for the absent security

I cant help but ask. Can you really not understand the logic behind what @japsander is trying to explain?. Its not hard.

Upon giving your details to sony to use their online service, they have a duty to keep your details secure and private. Just like banks do, just like ebay does, just like paypal does etc. The fact that they allowed an entity TO EVEN BE ABLE TO SEE THOSE DETAILS, is a big breach of trust and privacy.

It was proven that they could have prevented it, but didnt. Even after they were warned by anonymous...they just shrugged it off.

If you play with fire, and get burned, yes the fire was horrible/painful/unpleasant. But you cant blame your pain on the fire...you made the choice of playing with it even when you knew you could get burned. Same logic.

Sony failed to keep our information secure. This I understand. They should have taken the necessary precautions needed to insure the safety of our personal details. I just don't think they should be charged anymore than what the UK government has fined them. They literally (probably) being fined more money than what every PSN lost due to compromised credit cards COMBINED.

I agree they are probably being fined more money than what was/could have been stolen. But this is how punishment works. The money must be somewhat large for a huge corp like sony to take things seriously and to learn their lesson. (even though 250,000 is a footnote in their wealth).

If a burglar gets caught stealing a tv, in court he cant just tell the judge "I'll give it back", and then everything is back to normal. He needs to be punished aswell as the tv being returned by spending a year in jail.

Its all about teaching wrong doers lessons, and i think what people are trying to say on this thread is, 250,000 is not enough to make sony stop and think of what it cost them to not protect their customers sensitive information.

I'll make this simple Hypertext Transfer Protocol://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Network_outage > 250k. The potential in losses is so high it can't even be calculated.
