your gonna need a progskeet or 3e to downgrade. you get lots of stuff. play games single player or two player without having the disk. a bunch of other systems emulated on the ps3. linux can be reinstalled. custom themes. and much much more. that said i have a side note to mention since you have multiple consoles.. to save money over time. buy a console with a dead blu ray drive to go with your prog or e3. downgrade and mod that console first to get it working and make sure you can do it all properly. since you can find one for 30 or 40 bucks its better to be safe. if you get it then its safe to do a working console. and you can order a laser for 40 bucks and fix the broken console also and sell it or have another ps3. the process will also make you alot more familiar with the system and save you money on repair in the future and fixing yourself is much cheaper then sony repair.

Im not looking to do any hardware mods (buy broken systems and fix 'em). I took my iphone apart and almost broke it, although now I can do it with ease. Mostly just want to 'share' games without having to grab 'my' disk everytime.

i suggested the broken system to familiarize yourself with the downgrade process so you dont break a system that works or frustrate yourself to no end by bricking your ps3 that you use.. chances are you wont IF you follow instructions exactly. ppl post all the time it wont work and it turns out they missed a small step and it messed everything up. was just saying better to be safe then sorry basically. i didnt mean to do hardware mods :P downgrading tho in itself is sort of a hardware mod as you need an e3 or progskeet and a nand or nor clip depending on the type of ps3 you have. if you are looking to mod with just a usb flash drive you need your ps3 to be 3.55 or lower. anything over you NEED a downgrade like progskeet or e3

that said if you do downgrade it will allow you to play games with no disc after you get custom firmware just to be clear

So I have to use external hardware to downgrade? I figured I could rip an old version offline and just install that. Similar to getting old versions of yahoo messenger or itunes. Is that not available for ps3?

lol no not at all lol. its not like putting apps on a pc. its all locked off and secured. you need custom firmware to install anything not on psn. and you need to downgrade to 3.55 or 3.41 firmware to install a custom firmware. only other option is to wait and hope an easy solution comes for 4.31 in time

Well that sucks. Maybe it would be easier to just let someone else do it. See adds all the time on CL of people offering.

maybe but its not exactly hard...... and think of it this way. they could mess something up. and even if they dont. if you do mess it up somehow you have to pay them to fix it again.... you could spend the 70 bucks yourself and always be able to do it yourself and on more then one ps3.. ur gonna pay 40 or 50 bucks per ps3 you want done anyways... you are better off to do it yourself. you gain alot more from it. and there are step by step tutorials. and many many people here who will help you. its kinda like a ps3 for dummies guide. if you follow it and dont miss steps you WILL be able to do it yourself reasonably simple

long term it saves you money to diy. and not enough people wanna try these days. they just wait for a handout. thats the kinda stuff that slows the scene down. its good to learn stuff yourself and gain knowledge. then you can do all your ps3s and your friends. save lots of ppl time and money

I suppose that is true. I will be out of work soon, perhaps once I get moved and set up in the new house I will look into doing more. I am interested in learning this type of stuff, just not sure if I got the smarts to not break things. Never been much of a cpu type of guy. Only now in my old age am I getting interested haha
