From what i know, it needs to read the key from the BD Drive, as long as the drive is power, i think it should work.

if your laser is dead the disc wont spin dude. i just changed a laser. it will move slightly and you will hear a little click then it will stop dead. so yeah it sounds like a laser issue. maybe motor. but you can just get the whole silver assembly off ebay. and its not so hard either. open drive. take out 4 screwes. put new laser assembly in. but when ya close the black casing look throgh the sides cause there are a cpl white little prongs that gotta go in specific holes. and mind any tiny little wires. like on the cechg01 theres an eternal optical sensor with a tiny red n black cable going to the board
************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* id fix the drive and go for cfw over cobra. but thats me. and the drive can be fixed for not too much money anyways. like 30 to 40 bcks |

ok well if you open up the blu ray drive, and take it apart (take off outside metal casing, open black casing it comes apart in the middle into two halves. and mind the white circular plastic magnet ontop of black plastic casing as you need this. at this point you will see two white plastic arms holding that circle piece. those are the pieces that have the prongs that fit into holes on the drive arms. and its where ppl mess up. poles dont go into holes the drive arms dont move, they dont move the laser tray wont lift. blah blah.) all that jumble in the brackets is just an add on to above btw. open it all up. take out the laser assembly, its in a rectangle silver metal bracket. look on it for your laser model. aka kes-400a kem-410 blah blah. then look on amazon or ebay. im guessing 30ish bucks you can find a laser. and its really not hard to replace either if you have patience. do other apps work btw? psn games and netflix?
