maybe if you bend the left pin a bit like in the image, and scrape the protective layer from the 2 traces + and ground, you only have to solder the third wire to the other side of the board.



it's better to have it done if you never soldered before.

Good ideas but you will still need to runs the wires somehow. Just wondering from what side should you run the wires from?
Preferably run wires from that side of the board the connector was mounted on. BUT if tracks are missing and this cannot be achieved, will then have to take them from the other side of the PCB.

One thing I do not get is why you need to resolder it if you can glue it back on without getting the glue on gold connections?
Glue is not conductive? The glue is to stabilize the connector, i.e. make a good mechanical bond of the connector body to the PS3 motherboard - that way there will be no stress on the 3 connections when they are made and will make the soldering part of the repair much easier.

You see one wire, yes. THREE CONNECTIONS have to be made, ONE of which is made by that wire: The 'one wire' you see is because the repair technician could not make that connection easily on that side of the board (probably due to damage on the PCB) so he simply ran a wire to the connection on the other side of the board. You see that pro did it the way I would've tackled the problem. Also bear in mind that repair you see is unique to solving the problems on THAT particular broken PS3.

Honestly for someone who knows what they are doing in this field, the repair is not at all difficult.

I think you are right, I will take it to a pro shop and see how much they charge. If they ask more than $30 then I will try to fix it myself.

I took it to the local shop, the guy was asking $80. I decided to do the repairs myself. Anyway I soldered three wires at other side of the connector at those three points, ran the wires from the side of the mainboard, soldered on the pins of the connector, then connected the fan to the connector. I tested it with the top open but the fan is not spinning at all! The soldering looks OK to me, I used the same colour wires to make sure that there will be no up. How do I test where the problem is?

Edit.... Opened oi again, the brown wire had come loose. Resoldered it again. It is working now!

cool that you could repair it yourself. because having it done was a rip off.

btw, did you measured after soldering if you had a short?
i'm asking because i don't know if you saw the motherboard with the burned hole in it, this was due to a short on the fan wires.

anyway yours is working again, and we are happy about it.

Thanks to all very helpful posts here. No I did not measure it, If you can tell me how it is done then I will be happy to open it again and test it. I relied more on visual inspection. I was very careful with soldering making sure that I was not touching the main board with the rod for more than a second or two.

no need too if everything is working fine.
but normally i measure the resistance between ground and the points i solder and between solder points, low resistance means fail.

hope you did not forget about the pics, but if you did, there's no need to open the ps3. (if it's not broken don't fix it)

A bit technical for novice like me, I guess I need some tools to do it.

No I did not do the pics but I will do it next time I open it. PS3 was a bit fiddly to put it back for the first time but I got the hang of it after a couple of times.
