Question: 80mm fan on top of case, power supply?

Hello guys,

I want to place a 80mm fan on top of my ps3 fan, Cutting a hole on my case for better intake was the first idea, after seeing that my ps3 runs 10celcius cooler when without cover on a room that is above the "normal" temperature.

Now I was thinking about puting a fan on the outside, intaking directly to the ps3 fan, like sandwich effect.

http://www.caseking.de/shop/catalog/...mm::19733.html

Thats the fan right there. My question now is where should I get the power from for the fan?

Any ideas?

you are talking about the fat ps3 right?

there's 12V at the drive's power connector, but i don't know if the extra current can be a problem.

if you take the power from the fan, it will work for sure.

FAN pinout:
1. bown - +12V
2. black - ground
3. grey -pwm

BD pinout
1. black -12V
2. grey - ground
3. grey - ground
4. grey - +5V

the good news, you don't have to take the complete board apart for this, but don't short anything.!

No, Im talking about a Slim, on the fat the cooler is under the console, it wouldn't make that much logic placing a fan on top of the case

you can still take the power from the fan, but be carefull if you short the 12V to ground your mobo will have a burn hole in it.

the 12V to fan is unprotected

if you take the board apart, soldering it to the other side of the prongs can be an alternative.

Just found this:

http://pocketnews.cocolog-nifty.com/.../100422_08.jpg

Similar to my board, top right, 3 solder points should be the Fan connector, now my question, How am I supposed to close the board ( with metalic part ) on top of my cables, that will end in a short and a hole on my board will be born

i would probably slice the brown and black wire from the fan, and solder the wires from the new fan to it.
this way you don't have to take the board apart.

but be carefull not to short it.

if your BD drive still have the 4 wire power cable then you could get the power from there as well, the new fan is not taking that much power.

I like that idea! You could use the wire stripper to strip the wire, then solder the new fan wires. It is a lot easier than to solder direct on the main board.

if you isolate the solder joints then nothing will happen.
i only don't get it why most parts on the mainboard are protected by fuses, the fan isn't.

btw, your new fan will run at full speed, but you probably know that.

EDIT: i'm replying to the wrong person...lol
