i noticed the blue led flashing on startup, this means the ps3 thinks there's a disc inside.

i had the same thing on my ps3, turned out to be a faulty ribbon cable (mainboard to drive) , one trace in the ribbon was damaged.

it can also be that the optical disc sensor (the one with the black/red wire is broken?
the tiny connector is brittle.

if you hold eject for longer then 6 seconds the drive will force eject, this is for you a sign if the motors are still getting power.

but take a closer look to the big ribbon cable.

I tried my other ribbon cable and it still didn't work. Hmm, how can I go about fixing this little cable?

you have the same sensor twice, so you can swap that one also out.

if i need to take my drive apart i don't remove that connector (i broke a wire one day) , i just take out the screw on top and let it hang with the logic board.

i'm now off, will check back tomorrow if you still have problems.

What do you mean "you have the same sensor twice, so you can swap that one also out."?

On CECHG models, when it breaks down the BD player, often the failure is due to IC BD7956FS that is on the logic board of the BD player, if you put the logic board of the broke BD player in the BD player working, probably BD7956FS IC damaged other laser.
EDIT: you had to replace that component on the logic board before trying it on good laser, or use the good logic board doing the remmarry after replacing the laser

being the same model of ps3 does not guarantee it is the exact same. open it. look at the laser models. some units sony changed lasers mid production. from single do dual lens n so on
************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
im pretty sure if the logic board was dead he wouldnt be able to boot internal or psn games n stuff either mate

im guessing its one of the models that had the internals changed mid production so the laser is different. or that you have a wire or ribbon cable that is not right. but start with the laser. actually first if its a fat as i believe switch it off. flick on and hold eject. see if the fan goes into high gear n the tray tries to eject. as for your sensor the one on top is an optical one and yes u do need it. im trying to bypass one of my internal blu ray switches as we speak and not having much luck.
