What you have just said, the "programmable board" in this situation is the 3k3y device itself. Theoretically you're correct in assuming that one could duplicate the 3k3y's firmware's functionality allowing it to run on a development board, but such a board would require specific parts to make it connect to the PS3 plus you would need to know how to emulator and spoof data coming and going between the PS3 and the drive. Assuming you create a design and code it would cost way more to produce even on a small scale then purchasing a 3k3y. You could fabricate them by hand, but by looking at the 3k3y it would take over a day to produce a single unit by hand and then it would also cost the most of all 3 options; granted you have the skill and time to do this yourself.

How is it people still do not understand how the xk3y works?! IT is not possible to do what the xkey does with software alone... It only fools the ps3 into thinking IT is the bluray drive and it loads your games from a hdd as if you put a disc in. It has nothing to do with ps3 firmwares or private keys except the one related to the bluray drive itself so that it can confirm to the ps3 that it is the bluray drive. This info posted is useless unless you want to spend alot of money making a device thats going to cost a lot more than the xk3y itself. Unlike dongles this device is actually needed to do what it does. It does not allow homebrew though at all it is purely for pirating games as it only loads full rips of games.

@houtei
, well I guess that you can use this software to decrypt a game store it on hdd or USB, then play it on older firmwares with CFW, or even older like 3.41 with a dongle. but that is just a guess until try it.
