being a total hacking/modding/homebrewing noob, i would like to consult this forum from time to time regarding questions about using the ps3s hardware & software for all things that could be loosely described as "Veejaying" or creating audioreactive, moving graphics for people dancing around in dark cellars to the beat of strange electronic music...you get the idea.

I own the ps3 since a month now, purchased it mainly because my bluray-player died and enjoy an occasional game here and there.

other personal details:
Film Editor / VFX Producer for a living, typical "User" with no coding skills apart from the occasional action-script tag in AFX.
NON-Native english speaker.


My first question is related to "extracting" parts of the graphical assets from a game i downloaded - would the modding corner be a good place to start ?

all material in a game is copyrighted & extracting anything from said material could infract copyright law.....and do not download games this is also illegal....loads of people do it...but dont openly admit to it

wow - quick reply here, great -
- I actually bought all my games, in this case via psn store , this is what i ment by "downloading"

As for the extract-issue:

I'm planing to extract some of the games graphical elements, manipulate, alienate & project them as parts of an art installation with strictly non-commercial character. I've done this many times with all kinds of media and under different judicial conditions (where the original creator had to agree on paper, commercial projects, creative commons stuff etc) and have become somewhat of an media-law expert.

I can assure you that under current european & local german law none of my planned activities is even close to beeing illegal .

But thanks for the kind words - i totally understand the concerns...
