Changing thermal compound under CPU & GPU Heat Plate

Hi,

I need to change the thermal paste under the CPU & GPU Thermal plate. I've seen few videos on how to remove the plate so I will follow how they did. However, they don't tell how to put the plate back.

With what do the plate stick? Only Thermal Compound or there are glues?

PS: I am not reballing the PS3 and I don't have the equipment for it either. It is just that after changing the thermal compound on the CPU & GPU, it still heat a lot and the fans are really loud.

Thanks you

You need thermal adhesive to stick back the IHS ( heat spreader )

The cpu ihs is a b1tch to remove, I killed my former ps3 that way.
I had your problem, fan was really loud and kicking in early even after replacing the paste.
So I decided to change paste under the ihs as well. The gpu was easy, just had to pop it off but still be careful. When taking off the ihs of the cpu you have to very carefully cut your way through a very tough silicone glue and while doing it I messed up. Dead Ps3.

EDIT: Have a look at this thread and see what could happen, and DID happen to me. My damage was similar to the 3 pics supplied by Haz367, not good.

Hmm well it is a guy that was selling his PS3 Fat that has this problem, I told him I would try to change thermal paste and see if it fixes and if so I would buy it. Is it that dangerous to remove the CPU heat plate? I mean there must be a good way does it?

There are a few vids on youtube that shows how to remove it (by cutting the glue) but believe me, if you don't know what you're doing you WILL probably mess it up.

its easy said after one crapper... but that mistake i wont make again, just heat it up at around 150 degrees and use a "good" palet?! tool to remove it..no razors etc...and the CPU..best to not pull from one side only, gently cut it loose 360... go around making sure not to put the tool to low to prevent scratches or damage like we have...then it must be do-able
