no its not a bug, I know this cause I speak from personal experience. I had my original Launch PS3 get the YLOD after 4 years of constant play . It out lasted every slim I know of and even older phats.

I took it in for reball ( which cost me 45$ cause it was a thanksgiving special, but usually cost about 60$ @sheepninja ) well worth the cost to save my 650$ dollar machine permenatly.

Console runs fine now

What your experiencing is the PS3 trying to cool itself down, think of it like a fat man in shorts on the beach with no sun protection trying to stay cool with one of those mini handheld fans.

Your soldering on the inside around the RSX and CELL chips has fallen apart and the thermal paste is drying up. If you still have original paste on it then the paste comment stands true. Either way, if you had changed the paste to a proper paste, your problem then is the solder sony used is cheap ass solder with no lead to help take the heat.

I will bet my Ps3 that your solder points and ball points on the chips are cracked and falling apart. The reflow you did only melted what sony had on there and re hardened what sony has on there.

Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info. Turns out my PS3 actually got YLOD again today... Dumb me...

Once again, Thanks for writing such a long note for me

I'm looking to reball it myself. Can you link me to a reball kit that I need?

This is what I have, what else do I need?

Solder pen
Solder
Heat gun
Thermal paste

The rsx chip has over 1000 solder points, 1254 to be exact, and each are less than a mm in diameter. You damn sure aren't doing a reball without a proper reworking station, which is in the $1000 dollar range, more if you get bells and whistles.

I said 1254 points, not 1254 pounds, which is my wife's current weight.....in the morning, with no clothes on. Picture that.

Exactly, but twice the weight. That must be an earlier picture of her. She has been eating a lot at the local buffet....until they closed down due to too much food costs.

If your a new comer to soldering on chips and to the MOBO, I would not suggest you reball yourself. quicker to have a Pro do it for 60$ at a local shop ( granted they have the gear for it )

Heat guns are nasty devices why anyone trust them is beyond me. The chips like the guys above me said, have many many many tiny points to connect and solder. the solder balls alone for the job are hard as hell to handle, even for the above average and pro guy. Its not as easy as you think, unless you have done it before.

My only suggestion is like I said, find a local shop that will do a reball and have them do it. Generally you will have the ps3 back in the same day, I did with mine ^_^

I wish ya the best , and hope you find a shop. It will take some digging and lots of phone calls, but its worth it when you find the right one cause then you know a shop incase something happens again.
