D.I.Y Fan Controller Modification
I have had problems with my PHAT PS3 overheating, and I had a few spare fans laying around with a fan controller. So I thought I would modify the PS3 case to house these fans.
This is my first attempt at anything like this so give me your thoughts on how I could improve it. CECHG 60GB Model PS3 - Moddified with 25GB HDD ![]() ZALMAN ZM-MFC2 Multi Fan Controller ![]() I took the case off the fan controller so I could mark up the screw wholes. I drilled two wholes into the lid of the PS3 ant attached the fan controller. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Zalman fan controller requires a 12v power connection via a Molex 4 pin connection and until i can figure out how to wire this into the PS3 I am using an external power source using a Storage Magic Bridge. ![]() ![]() On the right had side of the lid, I made four wholes for a 120mm fan and drilled them. ![]() I then drilled wholes 1cm apart as a grill using a 4mm drill bit. ![]() Then I attached the fan using Fan screws.(Same as the ones on a pc.) ![]() ![]() ![]() I then did the same for a 90mm fan. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have the top fans pushing cool air into the PS3. I will then have fans on the bottom pulling warm air out. I will continue to do this project and update this post when I do. I plan on changing these fans for quieter and faster fans when I have the chance to go and buy some. [Read More] Last edited by GregoryRasputin; 03-05-2013 at 09:56 AM. |

I have ran it this morning for an hour and temp was 75c for cpu and 61 for RSX after playing a game. Just to note, have the bottom fans pushing air in, instead of out. Helps more.

Just be a bit careful because the bottom of the phat ps3s are meant for cool air to be pulled in not warm air out. You could hinder the stock fans performance like that.
For instance look at what I did here This way the stock fan can pull air in more freely and it drops temps quite well. The legs also help

I had the bottom ones pulling air out at first until i realised it was slowing the stock fan down. now i have then pushing air in.

dude you should add some FAN FILTERS so you dont have like 4x times the amount of dust bunnies you would otherwise have.
i recommend screw-on metal fan covers or that sponge-like stuff you could just slip in. I'm torn in between whether or not I want to fan or water cool. Power to you bud, you are awesome |
