There are ways but it's not recommended because it's not 100% reliable and doesn't always work and there's a risk of loosing your data, especially if the HDD has a reasonable amount of data ("tons of stuff").

Why risk it if he's never going to use this HDD for the PS3 except to check if it's downgradable or not?

It would be much easier and better if he gets a Flash Drive.

I managed to get the drive to FAT32 but ended up unplugging it without ejecting it the proper way. Now my portable hdd is blank now im trying to figure out any software that can recover my lost data. After this I will begin the JB process. ****s frustrating

Good job, I warned you about this!

I think there's a software from Acronis that might be able to retrieve your data, but good luck with that...

Never play around with the file system of a HDD full of important data unless you're converting from fat32 to ntfs!

You are right, it is easier to just use a flash drive.

But you said it was not possible, without formatting. It is possible, and I have done a few drives. Never lost any data.

The converting wasn't what messed the drive up. It was unplugging it while in use.

Always use safely remove hardware option, to remove drives from your pc. Then if it is still in use your pc will tell you not to remove it.

I don't think unplugging without safely removing would wipe your drive clean! If the computer was reading data when you unplug, nothing would happen. If the computer was writing data, the file(s) it was writing to would get corrupted. Maybe he unplugged while converting!

May i ask what firmware your ps3 is on just got hunch your on 4.31 if so read what got posted before you wreck something else

He is and he's trying to run minverchk to see if it's downgradable, but so far he has managed to wipe his external hdd clean while trying to convert it from NTFS to FAT32 because he doesn't have a flash drive. Oh boy!

Yeah I think I unplugged it while it was still converting haha. Well im using a progdram called Recuva, heard great things about it. After this im going to begin to see If I can jb my ps3
