I now have it working. Obtained a rip and that launched the game. had another crack at extracting the Duplex release, splitting it, transferring it, etc and got it to work. My guess is something went wrong while splitting the files. This time I only let the file splitter work on the single big file, not pointing it at the directory on my PC and telling it to transfer/split the entire folder over to my external.

On Rebug 4.3.1 this is what I did:
How to play the game from external hdd:

Kept these 2 files in USRDIR: EXTRASCIN1.PSARC and EXTRASCIN2.PSARC on my PC and moved the rest to external USB HDD.

Use the notepad that cames with windows7 to edit the ARCHIVES file to this:

hi im using this version God of War Ascension EUR Rip PS3 XaTaB on latest rebug, but it also keeps kicking me back to xmb, any ideas why?

so if i am to understand the last few pages of this thread.....no one has got it working discless unless you are on rebug with bdemu? Sound about right? Also, i am on 3.55 still, because Im old school like that ...so i had to replace eboot and param.sfo and all that jive. Does that mean i cant use the update 1.01 becasue it would replace the 3.55 eboot?

Have you tried all the suggestions?

Last person with rebug was able to get it to work by switching the boot mode to release mode in debug settings I think. Its rather recent in this thread

im on 4.31 rebug where is this, cant find boot mode?
*solved that by changing to debug.
where do i get the 1.01 update from? it automically d/l 1.02?, im on latest rebug 4.30
all it does is cycle back to xmb, tried everything

That's what I did and it works fine on my external after multiman installed the Largest files onto the internal drive. This is using rebug 4.30

well ive tried everyything with the rip version by xatab 20gb on external, with bdrom enabled in mm on my rebug 4.30 fw. Get a timer top right of screen for brief second then game quit event n cycles back to xmb. If anyone knows why i cant get this to work let me knw. Of all the games! never had trouble with the others
