BD drive error?

I was just sitting here playing Motorstorm: PR when suddenly it crashed during a loading sequence. I had to hard reset the system and this time the game wouldn't even start. Popped the disc in and out and it didn't even show up in xmb anymore. Tried a DVD and playback works fine, tried another game (cod4) but it wouldn't load either. I think I can hear the bd-drive chugging and spinning up and down when trying to load the game but nothing happens. So to sum up; dvd and cd playback works, bd does not work (atleast not for games, I've no bd movie lying around so I couldn't try that). Any clues what might be wrong?
Thanks in advance

Exactly what happened to me (except it was with MGO) BD games didn't work, DVD and CD playback did, I even tried to clean the lens with a DVD lens cleaner but eventually the three stopped working so I ended up replacing the BD Drive myself (Sony asked me to pay $600 where I live so I bought a drive for $150 and installed it myself). If the game does appear in the XMB and you start it an error code (80010514) should appear.
A lot of people are having the error lately (as if the drive is a timed bomb that goes off after the warranty expires)
Cheapest drive on ebay:

or you could change the lens but that is harder because you need to know which one you already have.

You can't replace the BD drive and expect it to work. The drive is electronically "married" to the motherboard, and therefore, your only option is to replace the lens, otherwise, you will only be able to run CD's/DVD's, as you've found out.

Don't say things that you're not unsure of. The PS3's motherboard is married to the controller board of the drive.
To change the drive, you have to replace the controller board which is very easy
I have changed the drive because mine didn't spin the disc after replacing the lens

Take into consideration the fact that the controller board wasn't mentioned anywhere in any of the posts, and I felt it was important to point out that you couldn't just replace a drive for another drive and leave it at that.

Thank you for the enlightment.
Yesterday I actually got the same kind of crash (during a loading sequence) with a demo running straight from the hdd, only once tho and it ran fine the second time I tried so it might just be a coincidence , but I'm thinking maybe it's something with the HDD and not the BD-drive... I never get any error codes or anything when my BD-games crash (I've understood that the somewhat common bd-drive error should generate some kind of error code when trying to load a game?).
I've tried to contact the swedish PS3 hotline support but it's leased out to a ****ing hoax company charging like $1/minute for being rude and more or less telling me to ask someone else and leave them alone, so now I'm having a discussion with the Sony Sweden office and they on the other hand seem to be taking this matter on a more serious level. If it doesn't lead to anything I'll just try swapping the HDD and if it doesn't work I'll swap the BD-drive w. controller board and I'll damn sure never pay for another Sony product.

This petition has a good cause btw:

If you didn't get the error and a game from the HDD crashed, it doesn't have anything to do with the drive. I was able to play PSN games without any problems when my lens was dead. It's likely to be an HDD problem or an overheating one. Try moving the PS3 to a well-ventilated place before buying a new HDD.
Here's an excellent one (500GB) if you need one:
Western Digital 500GB drive
I don't know if you could actually check the HDD sectors without formatting it using your PC. Remember to back up the PS3 using the "Backup Utility" in the "System Settings" menu as it backs up everything including save games that cannot be copied.
