Hi,
I got a big problem.
I just got a new harddrive for my notebook so I want to use the old hdd in my PS3. It's a Samsung HM160JI (160GB). So first of all i backed up my PS3-data and formated the Samsung. After that i removed to original PS3-HDD and installed the Samsung. Turned on the PS3 but it couldn't find the drive and told me that there's no system software to find.
After that I formated the whole hdd in FAT32 and tried again. No changes to above. Then I downloaded the newest firmware (which I already used before on the original HDD) and up it on the Samsung in "PS3\Update" but the PS3 couldn't find the firmware.
After that I formated my usb stick with FAT16 and copied the folder with the firmware on it.
Now the PS3 found the file and started formating. After this is rebooted again but then told me that there would be no system software available.
Can anybody tell me how I can get that piece of shi* working together with the PS3?
Thanks, Heiko

Problem solved. Don't know what was wrong, but after doing a second low level format and making the drive FAT32 again, the PS3 recognizes the hdd.

I'm having this same kind of problem

Ok here it is:

We dual booted with YDL, worked good.
Then dual booted with Ubuntu, worked good.
Tried to go back to YDL, and had an install problem, we figured Ubuntu was breaking it.

So in my stupid wisdom, I said, "Just pull the drive out, format it, and put it back in, the PS3 Firmware is kept on the console, not on the hard drive" The reason I said this is because I had success swapping out an 80 to 320 in an old 80gb (4xUSB and Flash Card Reader)

Well, we did that, Pulled out the hard drive, formatted it with a pc, and then put it back in. (This is on the newer version of PS3, 2xUSB no card reader)

Now it won't load up, we keep getting told to put in a drive with the firmware.

We're on version 2.52 (Which is what it requires if we need to load from jump drive, I even tried older versions, It won't take them).

I've heard that newer ps3's don't have enough memory on the internal flash to be able to store the entire firmware anymore, Is this true?

Any ideas on how to fix it.

I've heard you can't swap hard drives across consoles without formatting them either.
