xmb crashes when exiting virtual memcards

hi @all,

i have a little problem with my ps3 60gb. every time when i go into the menu for virtual memory cards and then exit (no matter if i changed something or not) the xmb freezes and i'm unable to control anything. surprisingly, when i hold the ps-button i can choose to switch the controller or the unit off. but no matter what i do, i can't navigate through the xmb again, until i turn the system off and back on.

does anybody know a solution for this?

i also googled that problem, cause that's what i do first when i have a problem, but i couldn't find a solution.

hopefully you can help me.

regards micro

P.S.: yes, i have the latest firmware ;-)

hi,
the point is: i bought this ps3 at ebay as "broken". the seller said the blue-ray laser is broken and thats it. i already tried quick format via playstation.
at the moment the ps3 is disassembled and i'm waiting for the new laser-unit. meanwhile, i wiped the disk with the seagate/maxtor emergency disc (acronis image).
as soon as i get the laser i will try again and maybe full format again.
i will post the results here for other users with the same prob.

regards micro

Do you have a disc in your PS3?
My PS3 used to lag when it had a disc in it (when my lens was dead)

nope, the error occurs even when there's no disc in the system. but you might be right and it was only the laser. the ps3 didn't even recognize that there was any disc. so i guess the laser-unit was pretty broken and the system lagged because of that.
however, i will see if the problem persists as soon as the laser is there.

My system also lagged when the PS3 lens was dead.
Just be careful during assembly, remember the position of every piece. When you remove the top cover, there's a piece of metal marked "2", this holds the torx screw in it's place, don't forget its position. The screws that hold the cover underneath the top one are not of the same length (I remember that there were three or four different lengths).
But most importantly be careful as not to break the ribbon cables (If you have a PS3 with a flash card reader then there's a ribbon cable under the cover) There are also cables on the BD drive be careful with those too.
I hope everything goes well

well, i really think everything will go right, concerning installation. actually, this is the first ps3 i repair, but i already repaired some nds and a psp. i also repaired a ps2 and some dvd-players for example ^^ so i think i got most of the knowledge i need. i really learned to be patient ;-)
as i already mentioned: i will post my results as soon as i get the laser-unit

Hey guys,

i installed the new laser-unit and got bad news: it still doesn't work... i even tried another laser-unit...

any ideas what could be wrong with the drive?

regards micro

EDIT:

i just found out, that the discs are spinning up. no matter what type of disc...
do you think it would help to replace the drive-board? one supplier said that i'd to replace a nand-chip, if i buy the drive board. is this true?
