changing screen resolutions on Debian GDM3
Getting tired having black borders on your screen with Debian? This is an overscan problem.
just add the following text to your kboot.conf after your HD UUID: video=ps3fb:mode:138 rhgb (don't know for sure the rhgb option is needed, no changes to the boot screen so I think this option doesn't work (RedHat Graphical Boot) (this 138 is for 1920x1080@50hz) Here are the other modes for the PS3, just change 138 to the number in front of the screen-mode you want: AUTO Detect Mode: 0: auto (480i/576i if not HDMI) 60 Hz Broadcast Modes: 1: 480i (576 x 384) 2: 480p (576 x 384) 3: 720p (1124 x 644) 4: 1080i (1688 x 964) 5: 1080p (1688 x 964) 50 Hz Broadcast Modes: 6: 576i (576 x 460) 7: 576p (576 x 460) 8: 720p (1124 x 644) 9: 1080i (1688 x 964) 10: 1080p (1688 x 964) VESA Modes: 11: wxga (1280 x 768) 12: sxga (1280 x 1024) 13: wuxga (1920 x 1200) 60 Hz Full Screen Broadcast Modes: 129: 480if (720 x 480) 130: 480pf (720 x 480) 131: 720pf (1280 x 720) 132: 1080if (1920 x 1080) 133: 1080pf (1920 x 1080) 50 Hz Full Screen Broadcast Modes: 134: 576if (720 x 576) 135: 576pf (720 x 576) 136: 720pf (1280 x 720) 137: 1080if (1920 x 1080) 138: 1080pf (1920 x 1080) VESA modes are only valid for the HDMI port. Testing screenmodes: root terminal: telinit 1 (goes to single user TEXT mode) Enter root password (PS3) ps3-video-mode -m xxx (choose the number in front of the screen-mode you want to test) The single user terminal will change directly to your chosen resolution after you push Enter. If everything is ok: telinit 5 (goes to normal user mode). Now you can see if your screenmode works with the graphic interface without modifying kboot.conf. After reboot you have your old screen-mode again if you don't change kboot.conf. Note again: this is for the standard (graf)Debian BootOS install downloaded through the internet using standard lvl2 V9. Other distro's may use Xorg.conf or something else to configure the X11 resolutions. Note2: I use Dot by Dot option on my Sharp TV for 1920x1080 P. Note3: because of tl/tube-light the screen looks blue on the picture below. No flasher on my Samsung Galaxy I9000 and to take my Sony Cybershot camera (bought before I knew Sony only sells licenses) was to much work (6m walk). The result: ![]() (have fun with the picture Sony...)

Installed Red Ribbon RC4 today, for changing screen resolutions do the following:
open terminal and enter following command: sudo leafpad leafpad opens (I got some errors on terminal while doing this but leafpad opens with read/write access) open /etc/kboot.conf change the 0 at the end to the one you want mentioned in my post before. save and reboot and see Red Ribbon in full screen

thanks so much for this guide.
i gave it a shot, and something's still not working for me, so imagine this was not the problem. i've attached a picture of my screen. it's got black borders, but more so, text is almost unreadable (very "blocky", not sure how else to describe, strains the eyes). i don't think it's a resolution problem, although i do appear to have some overscan as well. sorry for the terrible description!

This is not my strong side but have you tried installing the drivers for that or installing another OS completely to make the borders go away

My HD Ready Lcd Tv and most of those on the market have the resolution of 1366 x 768 .
Can i get exactly that resolution in Petitboot / Red Ribbon ? |

![]() For your resolution: I think GameOS also can't run in 1368x768. I think you use 720P for it? 1368x768 is a pc resolution. I think your TV also has a vga connector and that one is for 1368x768. It is not a connector used by the PS3 so that resolution isn't on the PS3. Videomode is set with the boot in petitboot (kboot.org). It can't be changed within Linux itself making your Red Ribbon (and any other distro out there) run with 720P max on HD Ready. The difference isn't that big tho (1280x720) ![]() ************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* Did you try different versions of dtbImage.ps3.bin (the petitboot image)?

I'd love to set that to 1366×768 too, windows supports it over HDMI, why can't Red Ribbon do it?

![]() Red Ribbon can't because GameOS can't also.... Check if your TV has an option for changing the 720P to fullscreen. With my Sharp it is called Dot by Dot but other brands might call it different..

Hey, thanks for reply!
Sorry for this, but i couldn't find better place to ask about that. Well, my TV doesn't seem to have that sort of thing (sharp LC32SH7EBK) so i guess i either have to hook up PS3 to one of my monitors or live with eye-pain causing resolutions :/. |
