Sata port multipliers

Has any one tried using one of those sata port multipliers on the PS3?

as you can get a nice 1 x 5 port multiplier:
http://www.addonics.com/products/hos.../ad5sapm-e.asp

then get a ps3 to esata connector cable something like from here:
http://www.addonics.com/products/other/

using one of these:
http://www.procase.co.nz/backplane_m...lane_index.htm

of cause using the sata model

then get a small cube case big enough for the all the above bits and putting them together inside it

that could get you a nice 5TB's of storage space
what do you think?

Sadly this won't work, the device you are ooking at takes 4 internal sata connections & turns it into a external caddy that supports upto 4 drives.

Sorry but It DOES, it allows for the use of 5 x 1 drives on a single sata channel , hence the port multiplier name, have a look at their related links

if you actually took the time to look at the sata ports on the devices, it clearly shows 5 sata ports, it was a simple typo on their page.

Hey thebigman thanks for your input anyway

Back on topic, this in theory should work, but im not sure the PS3 would be capable at the moment of understanding all that space.

Good point you make GregoryRasputin, but since it is likely that the ps3 has either Linux or more likely Freebsd/Netbsd then i suspect it would use one of the 64 bit journaling FS on offer, as we know that you can store larger than 4gb files using http etc to transfer the file onto the ps3

i doubt the ps3 will be able to recognize multiple drives like that. u need a external RAID controller to make them all be seen as one drive like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817332021

from the site, you just posted:

Cons: my laptop ESATA can only see the first drive. Have to buy another card to get it to work with a laptop.
Other Thoughts: The only laptop card I found that will work with this Enclosure and show all five drives is the SIIG SC-SAE612-S1 SATA II ExpressCard 54 - Retail

so if the laptop needs a card to read the raid drives as this is only a controlerless cradle, it won't work

that is why a stated the port multiplier that would work as it is part of the sata spec

thanks for your input on the matter though

Did anyone ever try this to see if the system will work with a drive over 2TB? Now that you can copy games to the drive, that kind of space might be very useful.
