[Tutorial] Jailbreak your PS3 via TI-84 Calculator (newb friendly)
The following guide was made by adrenaline786 from PSX-Scene. It will teach you how to jailbreak your PS3 via PSGroove.
=============================================
This guide will cover the basics of jailbreaking and installing backup manager onto your Playstation 3 using a TI-84+ or TI-84+ Silver Edition graphing calculator. The exploit is designed to run on PS3 firmware version 3.41 and will not work otherwise. Please also read Brandon Wilson's FAQ located at http://brandonw.net/ps3jb/ for information on the port. Please note that there is a chance of the app resetting your calculators ram, so backup your calculator before running the application.
This guide in no way promotes piracy and should only be used to back up games you have already paid for and own.

I. What you will need:
- TI-84+ Calculator with USB cable
- TI Connect (download for windows or download for mac)
- Modified version of Brandon Wilson's TI-84+ PSGroove port with backup manager enabled (http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=14941)
- FAT32 formatted flash drive
- Backup Manager Package (cant link because illegal file)
II. Installing TI Connect and Updating the TI84+
- Download and install TI Connect

- Plug in your calculator, Windows should automatically detect and install the drivers for your calculator.
- Make sure your calculator has the newest firmware. Click on updates

- Then make sure under "TI Device Applications" that "Device Operating System" is checked.

- Choose your TI-84+ when it starts scanning and click select

- At this point, if there is an update for your calculator it will prompt to for your username and password (you can create an account for free on TI's website). Install the update and continue to the next section.
III. Transferring PSGroove Port to the TI84+
- Open up TI Connect, then click "TI Device Explorer"

- You will now see the contents of your calculator. Click on the " + " next to "Applications" to see all the applications installed on your calculator.

- You now need to drag and drop the PS3JB.8XK file to the applications section that you just expanded. If done correctly, you will see "PS3JB" listed under Applications.

Congratulations, you have successfully transfered over the exploit to your calculator. Continue to the next step to install the exploit onto your PS3.
IV. Transferring Backup Manager to a USB Flash Drive
- This is simple, once downloaded, simply transfer the package file onto a FAT32 formatted USB flash drive.
V. Activating the exploit
- Turn your Playstation 3 completely off. Switch the power button on the back to off, or unplug it from the power outlet.
- On your calculator, press the "APPS" key and scroll down, you should see PS3JB. Select it and hit Enter.

- You will see a splash screen with a version number, press any key to continue, then press 1 to start the exploit. Now, connect your calculator to your playstation 3 via USB. You will see this screen.

- Flip the power switch on the back of your PS3 to on, or plug your playstation 3 back into the power outlet and turn it on, then QUICKLY press the eject button (I press it several times to make sure). It will say "Working...", then eventually switch to "Working...Done".

- Go to Games under the XMB, you will see 2 new items. "Install Package File" and "/app_home/PS3_Game/". If you see these 2 items, congratulations, you've activated the exploit. Now onto installing backup manager.

VI. Installing Backup Manager
Once the exploit is activated:
- Plug in your USB Flash drive (with the backup manager package on it). Then, go to "Install Package File" under the Game XMB and you should see "manager.pkg", select it.

- It will prompt you with piracy warnings, accept if you agree and you will have installed Backup Manager.

VII. Backing Up Games
- Insert a game
- Under the Game XMB, select backup manager
- Once backup manager loads, you will see the game you inserted into the drive and it will give you the option to Load
or Backup (Circle). Press Circle to backup your game. - It will give you the option to install it to an internal or external drive, choose whichever you want.

- The game will now start backing up to your hard drive

- Once finished, backup manager will return to its initial screen and you will be able to view your backed up games.
VIII. Playing Backed Up Games
- Activate the exploit using your calculator (by going into APPS and selecting PS3JB...)
- In the Game XMB, select Backup Manager
- Insert any Blu-ray disc into the PS3
- Select the game you wish you play, it will kick you back to the game XMB- but the game you selected will be mounted and show up as a blu-ray disc. Select it and enjoy :-)
Here's a video since some people are having trouble playing the backed up video games.

A: 2.53 - Q: What type of USB cable do I need?
A: A mini-usb cable, the same one that charges your PS3 controller. - Q: Does the calculator need to be plugged in and on the entire time?
A: No, one you see "Working...Done" and backup manager shows up on your XMB you can close the application and turn off your calculator. - Q: Do I need to have a blu-ray disc in the drive to play a game using backup manager?
A: Yes, you must have a blu-ray disc inserted when playing backups - Q: I press 1 on my calculator to activate the exploit but it freezes, what should I do?
A: Update your calculator to the latest version - Q: My calculator restarts and tells me my ram has been cleared everytime I try to start the exploit, what should I do?
A: Update your calculator to the latest version - Q: I don't see anything when I select "Install Package Files", why doesn't it show manager.pkg?
A: It will not show backup manager until you have your flash drive connected with the manager.pkg file on it, once your flash drive is connected, it will appear and allow you to install backup manager. - Q: I've tried everything and everytime I load a game I get a black screen, what should I do?
A: Delete all the game saves and game information on your PS3 for that game, then start the game. It should then work.

game loads but PS3 controller doesnt work
I got back up manager working and i backed up my copy of street fighter 4, the back up loads fine, but none of the ps3 controller buttons do anything.....i dont understand why. anybody know a fix to this problem or if its game specific?
EDIT: Yeah its the game itself, apparently street fighter 4 and super SF4 dont work properly. I backup up my demons souls disc and it worked perfectly.Last edited by castlemadeofsand; 09-21-2010 at 11:15 PM.

thank you pirate for the best tut on using the calculator.carnt understand the dozens of questions on the download when this tut is so concise.it works very well indeed.firstly i have disc in ps3 so when you get to power on the front bit and quickly press eject i press the eject once disc comes out press again disc goes in.never had a problem and your game disc will be in the tray and your set to load off hard drive. As a note i think silver edition of calc is best as i have the normal + edition.i had a usb not enough memory problem when installing jb to my apps.i had done an update, new update installs loads of free stuff.i had to deleate prob solver off calc,to install jb. silver edition has 3 times the memory so you wouldnt get this problem.as to the above youd find your operating sys under system .where youll find mac addy and how much hard disc space.no you carnt use any other calc but the ti84+

hi guys, some questions
- can you only use a flash disk (thumbdrive) in FAT32 to play your games or can you use a external HDD (like seagate plug and play) formatted in FAT32?
- instead of using FTP, can you copy the games from your external HDD to your internal HDD directly? does it have to be in FAT32 too or NTFS?
