No, some firmwares introduce a redesigned flash with new features/directories that games will require to run, however, 3.42 didnt implement anything new that a game could require. Games will never "care" what firmware your console is running. They will try to run and its the console that requests an update based on the update file found in the game's directory. If you got around it with a firmware that didnt meet the requirements of a game then it would just fail to load or crash down the line. However there is no new firmware being released that introduce anything like this and surely no games that use them yet if 3.50 introduces any.

I couldn't care less, that game look like arse anyway.
But I do hope to be able to play a legit BR or backup of GT5 someday. |

If you buy a game and back it up with BM then you should be able to go to the game directory and change the UPDATE.PUP file to 3.41 or anything below for that matter.

there is more to the ps3 update process thatn just editing the sfo or chaning the pup file the task itself is controlled somewhere else in the ps3
and if a game it required to have an update there is hard to pass by this right now as edting the sfo wont work because once the ps3 checks the sfo and it asks for a higher firmware you cant get thee message to go away by changing the sfo to a lower firmware version this update checker is called before the ps3 will even take a look at the sfo or eboot.bin i have tried this with my backup manager where i edited the param.sfo to read as 3.42 and it asked me to update but then i put the original param.sfo back and it still asked me to up date from there i have tired it in both non jb mode and jb mode nothing but it asking me to update to 3.42 from there i deleted everything in the laun12345 folder(except gamez) including the eboot.bin and it still asks for the 3.42 update this means that the task the controls the updates doesnt jsut stem from the sfo it stems from somehwere else withint the ps3 the only other thin i can think of is the pdb files in the task folder but idk their hex codes well enough to mess with them and even fi you delete them it will still ask u for the update. |

Hey everyone,
I just found something out. I was just trying some things with my GT5P Backup. I changed it so, that it now requires 3.50. And I think you can do it the other way round and make a game which really requires 3.50 to 1.50 or any other FW. Greets Last edited by alf13; 09-21-2010 at 04:26 AM. Reason: forgot that it is GT5P |

Changing .sfo to override FW requirements in an option for now, but the big question is what it going to happen when new games will start to call functions from newer versions of prx modules, therefore even the sfo trick won't work and we will need to find something else. I guess the only real answer to the issue is CFW... Let's see what the future brings us! I think (if not before) when GT5 comes out, we are going to see real SONY's response on there fight against backup games...

yes that is true but for the next few games it may work...
I think someone who want to buy one of those games could try that and tell us. |

i think hackers will get around the fw checks with temporary solutions until CFW will appear.
why? i am sure most things will follow psp's suit as their software is quite similar (altho sony did learn a lot from psp hackers and were thus able to for so long time to keep the ps3 protected).. i'd guess a game launcher will appear similar to one created by MPH for psp that allowed playing 2.00 games on 1.50 fw. it had flash0 and flash1 from 2.00 fw and used those to sort of emulate 2.00 enviro or something, but only ingame. or maybe jaicrab's fw loader (or another app) will evolve into something like booster's devhook on psp and will allow us to run the fw completely from mass storage. however, both of these steps will require decrypting the firmwares and those things haven't been done yet. i hope some pioneers from psp scene will move onto ps3 as that'd give a great boost for the scene, they know their 5h1t. it's unfortunate dark_alex stopped as well. -- or, possibly if the fws won't be decrypted anytime soon, we will be able to swap some prxs from older games, also editing sfo and possibly hexing the eboot.pbp. time will tell.
