I think that playing ps2 backups is possible (on the ps3)

I don't have a ps3 but i think that playing ps2 backups is possible on the ps3 without any hardware modification.
Just by using PCSX2 0.9.3 on Linux there are two version one for 32bit and the other for 64bit.
But i think it would be very very slow
Just try and see by yourself.

The linux version is for X86 hardware and the Ps3 has PowerPC hardware. It wouldn't work.

Sadly true. And anyway, Linux on the PS3 has no access to 3d (or even 2d?) acceleration, so even if PCSX was ported to ppc code, it would be lucky to animate the title menus.

I'm a firm believer that any GEN 1 or GEN 2 system could be completely emulated in linux if it were ported to work on the CELL.

I sure hope so!

One thing that has worked well in the past: We could set up a donation based system to support a set team of Emulator coders. What do you think?

I think that if an account was set up to accept donations then there would be issues with its management. What would we do with the money? Pay ourselves a salary? The cost of development is really nothing and I think pirate would want to keep all the dough for himself.

There is plenty of coders out there who would be willing to help work on a team to establish on a task such as that there really wouldn't be any need to introduce money, unless you hired a random cheap ass coder to do the job.

Correct, PS3 Linux (or rather OtherOS programs) have no access to any form of graphics acceleration- although the SPUs can be used to accelerate both 3d and 2d graphics, it's pretty tricky to implement in a simple manner though, I've tried to accelerate TinyGL for PS3 linux purpose but so far the acceleration been quite... difficult, I believe if I get time and motivation to rewrite parts of TinyGL instead of just trying to accelerate the code that already is there acceleration would be much more usable; but from my experience the SPUs aren't really good for texture mapping- anyway haven't had time to look too much into it yet, it's something I've been working on since july if I get it up to a decent level I plan to release it (before that no; it's my personal playaround/sparetime project, so don't bother asking)

But point being while there is no obvious "graphics acceleration" available, the SPUs provide acceleration and computional power to "simulate" a decent graphics card theoretically- how hard it would be to implement in practice is another question.
