*ahem*
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Sony, it's far too late now. Your board of directors should all be fired if you think taking these actions will protect your money. The exploit has been ported to a vast array of devices, countless more will follow, a few previous firmware revisions have been ported, including versions supporting Linux. You may be lucky and vulnerabilities will not be found in later firmware. But so what? techniques to flash older firmwares are being developed and ANY code in game binaries can always be patched. I understand that you have no choice but to pursue this in court, but you are alienating your once loyal user base. The days of the PS2 are gone, you should be giving what precious few users remain what they want. I don't pirate games but I for one will never buy a Sony product again, let alone your next gaming console, your actions are nothing but greedy, corporate bullying. go and **** off and sell some TV's, that's what your good at. Piracy wouldn't really hurt the ps3 either. It's not as if the security resulted in great sales during the first 3 years. It was in last place the whole time, while the Wii with its terrible security was in first. I have a hunch the real reason Sony is being so aggressive is that if and when someone reverse-engineers the firmware, they will find out Sony was doing something illegal. Similar to the rootkit cd scandal. Something they say they can do under the Terms of Service, but still against the law in many countries. I expect it would be about gathering personal information, spying on your hard drive, selling info about you to other companies, or other kinds of privacy issues. They've generally had a philosophy of "the ToS is the law" and they'll make the firmware do whatever they want - because up till now they could do so safely. Noone else knew what the firmware did. It could even raise issues with such high security in any OS, proprietary or not. On pc's it doesn't matter so much, their are experts everywhere who can quickly figure out how it works and what it's doing. If Microsoft were to start spying on you, somebody would catch them in a day or two. But for all anyone knows, Sony could have been using GameOS to steal classified information from the US Navy and all the other US government agencies that used OtherOS clusters. Not likely, maybe - but it's still a security risk for the end-user, especially when the end-user's a government agency or research institute. They've all been trusting an unknown OS made by a foreign company all this time. If it turns out there was anything dirty in the firmware, governments might notice that and cause trouble for Sony. But ya know what, i kinda see where he is going with this! Wii = Hacked. DS = Hacked. Nintendo never did that much to stop it, that anyone has really heard of. PS1 = Hacked. PS2 = Hacked. PSP = Hacked. Up untill now Sony havent really done that much, and they are STILL making and selling PS2 consoles (here in the uk at least) that they know, someone could buy, and NEVER buy a game for it, same with the PSP. So what actually IS going on with the PS3 that they are no so worried about us finding out! =/ hhmmm
