PS3 Getting very hot
With the progress of jailbreaking and the rest of it I decided on getting an old PS3 missing a BR drive out of storage. Its a few years old but still works fine.
One problem I'm having is heat issues. Back of console states "CECHG03" Even after being on for 30 minutes it seems very hot. I have the top cover off, when I place my hand around or on the heatsink clips I notice it is a bit too toasty. After about 2 hours most of the metal shell is very hot almost untouchable as is the PSU. Whats the best solution to this? I really don't know much about P$3 modding. Should I be looking at some external cooling solution or some internal modification e.g. additional fans Seeing as this is an older version I'm worried that its a prime candidate for YLOD thanks |

you should apply new thermal paste, the wiki states that the cheg03 has a 90nm gpu and a 65nm processor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3_Hardware so it should get hot and the power supply is ridiculous also, hence why i got a ps3 slim, what i did was put the ps3 a few inches off the table, on top of a book because those little rectangle holes near the hdd bay are important, took off the top cover, and put a pedestal fan directly at the ps3 over the summer days

Buy a heat sink, or put a small fan in the next game

Well I don't really know that much but I don't think its not a good idea to have the top cover off because it loses cooling efficiency. Same reason you don't remove the cover for your pc.

i was wondering about how consistent it is taking the cover off thats why i placed a fan just in case, but i assumed as heat rises the power supply should be cooler or the heat from it wouldn't be sucked through the heat sinks, but i didnt do this for long due to exposure and dust , but its better taking off the top layer hiding the screws

Pour water on it! :D
Nah, the heatsink getting hot is a good sign isn't it? I mean, if the thermal paste was gone, not much heat would transfer to the heatsink anymore. My launch 60 gig pumps out a lot of heat and sometimes the fan speeds up a little. Never had the fan go full speed unless it's turned upside down. I think the reason people are telling you to put the cover back on is air flow and pressure. It's not always about letting more air inside, sometimes you want a negative pressure to help draw cool air inside, and have it flow over the important parts. PC case mod guru's go on about this stuff all the time.

Make sure it's standing up and not laying down.. they sell external usb fans at Walmart (Belkin for 20$) that curve really well with the Playstation 3.

Don't bother adding fans, ideally you should change the thermal paste and maybe crank up your internal fan. It's all about airflow, sucking the hot air away from the hot components, drawing cool air in.
I've thought long and hard about adding fans to the PS3, but it's engineered close to perfection, which is hard to beat. The only thing they did wrong was prioritise noise, by basically slowing the fan down. Killerbug has a great tute (or you can buy the finished peice) and also mentioned buying a 3.3v converter to tap into the 12v going to the fan to run it at full speed (so it's quite, but you can give it a burst of 100% when needed). Killerbug's DIY fan controller thread Killerbug's fan overclocking - I went this route, because it's so simple (and cheap)!

and if you want your ps3 even cooler...you can switch your HDD for a SSD (much less heat)
