Sony could probably see what you were running through the PSN even in 3.55, they are not allowed to do anything about it though. In most countries backing up the games isn't illegal. The only action Sony can take is ban your console from PSN -so what?. Bricking it is highly illegal aswell. Anyhow, if you login to PSN with a CFW you're kinda looking for trouble

And for the people above saying "the scene is dead" and crap like that they're either totally new to such stuff or working for SCEA...nothing is unhackable; I think that has been proven more than once and especially not the one and only console that has been hacked to the bone up to now.

If this was all just about home brew, then Sony might have looked the other way. But everybody was determined to pirate, and try to make game hacks, so Sony had to do something.

I was happy with just the emulators, I don't feel the need to pirate, and I'm not some lame cheater with no cod skills.

It's a shame.

Sony have always been able to see what your running, that's long been established....

And the console has not been exactly hacked to the bone, it is also well known that both GeoHotz and fail0verflow held back on certain info knowing it would enable piracy which they both claim to be against....

Sony Dev's are not a bunch of dunder heads, they have the same access to files/tools/codes released by hackers, they have therefore been able to see exactly how the system was broken, what it was that Geo and friends held back and how to use that against the hackers to fix the breach.....

Hackers as clever as they are, are not infalable, notice how none of the renound hackers have come forward and said that they have a solution in the making....The only thing we know is they can De-crypt and re-pack but they can't sign.....

Like I said Sony are not stupid, there was a solid plan....Get the TRO...keep the with held info off the internet and release the 3.56 security fix....

The problem to begin with was fail0verflow not diggin deep enough and getting all the keys while they were there and still stating that the system is wide open - yes, some people could have used it for piracy, but then some people could create huge open-source games, others might have created social communities, and others would use it to heat up their room in the winter - point is, endless options.

Of course that is their perogative and I thank them for what they did do.

What remains unclear to most, at least according to the comments i see on various sites, is that the recent lv1/lv2 peeks and pokes are exploits, circumventing the system, which is still very much closed to us.

The 3.55 and lower FW keys and signing tools only allow running small applications which may or may not use those exploits (emulators vs. backup managers).

Now, suppose changing 1 byte in one lv1 function allowed mapping of memory in lv2 (to peek/poke), and they patched that up in 3.56..
It is conceivable to find another loophole like that, since flukes1 was literally poking functions at random to see which will give him access without crashing etc.

But they have also changed Keys to use random numbers (if you've seen fail0verflow's presentation, no more "return 4;").
Finding 1 such key would take a little while, namely :

"Breaking a symmetric 256-bit key by brute force requires 2^128 times more computational power than a 128-bit key. A device that could check a billion billion (10^18) AES keys per second would in theory require about 3Χ10^51 years to exhaust the 256-bit key space."

That's 3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Years.

So in my view, breaking that would require a massive networked infrastructure such as the Folding@Home, with JB PS3's, GPUs, CPUs, hell, everything any user can contribute doing these calculations 24/7.

The more likely option would be for one of the talanted people in the scene to find a new type of exploit, cicumventing the need for new keys and allowing the use of old ones instead.

And of course people forget that Sony actually has the source code.
Whatever hacks, exploits and tricks we may find with a lot of time and effort, they can locate and fix or patch extremely quickly - despite what has been said - again, hacks, exploits and tricks - not legit signing tools and keys.

People flame Geohot and fail0verflow because they said there was nothing Sony could do, and they were right, Sony can't do a thing to change some of the hardware dependant algorithms without changing the hardware - however while all of the software hadnt been hacked to be fully accessible with all keys of everything, Sony can still shift stuff around enough to at least make it very hard to re-hack.

Just my 2 cents i guess.

Dude, dont just assume that everyone on here is trying to get something for free. I use my PS3 to run back ups. But the reason i do so, is my PS3s BD Drive has decided it doesn't like to load games anymore. ( Once the initial loading issue has worked, it runs games fine ) And because of this the only way i can play my £45 COD: Black Ops or £30 Fifa 11 on my £250 PS3. Is to re-inser the disc 40-50 times, or buy another £250 PS3 or give Sony £9,999,999 to fix it..
Or just play my backups.. be abit more open minded dude.

its no big deal. It always been like that, its not gonna change now.
I know its a problem if we get banned from PSN but we can still play the backup games.

I think that sony will not ban people. They will continue going on with firmware updates to separate themselves from cfw consoles. I believe that all games ps3/xbox/wii will start having a code to play multiplayer on the back of the original game manual. Or you can buy the code for $10. This way the game developers will at least get something for all their hard work. So download games all you want but to play online your gonna have to cough up that money, also continue to fight against sony's firmware updates.
