dana23 - That board should work.

paulpsomiadis - I still don't know what is going wrong with your circuits...no one else seems to have issues like that...and it seems like every circuit you make has the same issue. I wonder if you are missing a step somewhere (are you 100% sure there is no conductivity between IC pin 2 and IC pin 4 when the IC is removed?).

KillerBug, good work. You definitely have the most sophisticated design and i think I trust it the most.

I made up a new version of the assembly guide for the unassembled kit & bare PCB buyers...this is for the latest version of the "trimmer" design...intended to be easy to solder (other than the connector; but I couldn't help that). This one only covers the "trimmer" version...I'll make up a version for the version with an off-board potentiometer in the next few days.

Note that while this design is a plug-n-play unit, the connectors that make this possible are the most difficult part of assembly. This unit can work as a solder-in model, spliced into the fan wires if you feel up to the PCB work but not up to the tiny pins. Or, you could always buy assembled units from me...or you could just make it yourself with the guide from the first page...unlike Sony, I am all about freedom of choice!

Hey Killerbug, I have a BC 20gb ps3 and have a 12v fan mod on it right now. It is very loud and was wondering if you had any experience with your custom boards with the 20gb model (CECHBxx). The reason I am asking is because previous with models I have owned (60gb & 80gb) I was able to do the simple pot mod with a 200k pot. I tried to do this with the 20gb model but there is no change in fan speed. Does the 100k pot make that much of a difference? I'm curious to know as i've always used 200k pots with zero problems until I got this 20gb model.

If the fan is made by delta and has three wires, my mod should work (it even works to control other Delta fans...like the 4-wire fans you find in Dell servers)...but getting 20GB models to test with is not an easy thing to do. If you build the circuit, please post back here and confirm that it works.

I tried your circuit with a 100k pot and it did not work for me. I then tried the 100k pot by itself and it still didn't work. The fan model I have is a 3 wire, 15 blade nidec (grey, black, brown.) I want to assume there is a defect in the fan itself but I don't know enough to say there is.

Interesting...like I said, the old 20GB models are a bit of a mystery to me...I have never had one in my hands. If you could post the model number of the fan, I'll try to find a datasheet to see how the fan works...I am sure I could whip something up if I can find the datasheet (a hi-res image of the sticker would be great).

The other option might be to swap the fan for a 19 blade from a later model...I'm just not 100% sure it would fit.
