I sell a plug-n-play versions of this design on professionally made PCBs. I charge $20 each plus $5 shipping per order...this gets you priority shipping (2-3 days) inside the USA, and airmail to most of the rest of the world. If you would like to order, send me a private message and I'll send you my paypal address.

I installed Killerbug's controllor some time ago and it works very well. I highly recommend his design since its compact and the quality is top notch. I only wish there was an option to install a temperature sensor on the heatsink or around the gpu die to see how hot the ps3 is on some small LCD or something.

The idea of controlling the fan with a POT is great, but i think that i would turn it down by accident or something silly.

What i was thinking is since the ps3 already controls the fan speed could we just make it spin the fan faster. From what i have read in this thread you cannot do this from CFW yet.
If the gray wire controls the fan speed by giving it a different voltage from 0-3v would it be possible to cut this wire and attach it to some circuity that will increase the voltage.
For example if it always added 1 volt to the gray wire, the playstation may think that it needs 0.5v the circuit adds a volt and the fan gets 1.5v.

Also KillerBug any news on the new deluxe version?

I think your forgot the 10K Ohm resistors in your schematic. Or are they really needed?

Edit: I just removed them and it still works. The reason why I removed them is because my circuit is welll...not small.

Yikes! That looks like a short circuit waiting to happen!

Yeah...the 10K resistors are just safety stops...so long as you don't turn the POT all the way up or down, they are not needed. On some models, going all the way up causes the fan to stop spinning...and the circuit itself starts to overheat if the POT is all the way down without a resistor...so there are safety resistors on both ends of the spectrum. These 10K resistors can be as low as 1K, but I don't recommend it; the fastest ~9% of the fan speed makes a terrible high pitched wine on every system I have tried, and 10K is already a very low "minimum speed"...if anything, the low side resistor should be higher.

zembor0 - You are not the first person to recommend this...but there is an issue with the idea. The PS3 controls the fan speed based on the temperatures...and if it did this correctly, there would be no need for a fan mod. However, it only increases fan speed after the system starts overheating...therefor, if my fan controllers increased speed at that point, it would be too late anyway.

I see the idea as being a lot like a net for a circus performer...a net hung just inches from the floor. It would give the performers a feeling of safety that might lead them to take less care with their aerobatics...and it would provide no protection at all if they fell. It would take something dangerous (aerobatics without a net) and make it more dangerous by removing the perception of danger.

If you are really concerned that you might turn it down accidentally, there is the all internal version...you just set it and forget it...you can't even turn it down intentionally without re-opening the system.

[EDIT]
I have posted this guide, plus two others, plus a full price list and ordering instructions on my blog: http://killerbug666.wordpress.com/

I'm sure people have already said this, what about a temperature controlled one. Would it be as simple as swapping the POT with a thermistor, or would it be more complicated?

@ zembor0... From afterdawn: http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-...an_fix-865649/

GeToChKn has been kind enough to redesign this circuit to work with more versions of the PS3 (all tested so far work). As shown, it uses a thermal sensor to control fan speed, but it can easily be changed to potentiometer control. Here is his diagram:

Thanks for the info, i am a little unsure of what IC to use, the website i am looking at does not have a LM555 but i guess a similar version wont be a problem.
The website offers these: witch one would be best?
NE555 SINGLE TIMER (RC)
NE555D SINGLE TIMER (SMD) (RC)
TS555CN CMOS TIMER DIL-8 (RC)
TS555CD CMOS TIMER SO-8 (RC)
TLC555CP CMOS L/PWR TIMER (RC)
ICM7555IPA CMOS LOW POWER TIMER (RC)
ICM7555IBA CMOS LOW POWER TIMER (SMD) RC
NE556 DUAL TIMER (RC)
TS556CN DUAL CMOS TIMER DIL-14 (RC)
TS556CD DUAL CMOS TIMER SO-14 (RC)
ICM7556IPD CMOS LOW POWER DUAL TIMER RC

Also how accurately do i need to meet the resistor resistances?
Finally "Metal Film Resistors" or "Carbon Film Resistors" and "Ceramic Capacitor" or "Polypropylene Capacitor" or "Suppression Capacitor"?

I guess it makes no differense but its alway best to ask
