FTP transferring slow to PS3
Please help with below Issue:
Since upgrading the PS3 HDD from 120GB to 640GB, the FTP transfers went from doing around 2.0MB/sec on average on the 120GB drive to 100kbps on the 640GB drive. I highly doubt the issue is with the HDD. In-case you want to know the new HDD in the PS3 is WD6400BEVT. Hardware: All cables are 6 feet Cat 5e Cisco Switch *not router* Model : SD2005 5-port *It can't be the switch as I dl approx 1Mb/sec on the PS3 store, which also rules out the PS3 hardware as an issue.* NIC for PC: Realtek RTL8168B/8111B PCI-E integrated NIC *On-board* *there is no issue with the NIC port on the PC as I can dl 2.0Mb/sec FTP Client: Originally used Core FTP and then switch to FreeZilla to see if the outcome was the same. Connected directly to the PS3, no port forwarding or port # assigned. The only thing left that I can think of is buying new cables, but it doesn't make sense that I get good download/upload speeds. But ****ty transfer speeds. PS3 Internet Connection Test shows: Connection Speed DL: 1.4Mbps Connection Speed UL: 984.1kbps Is there anything else I should be telling my FTP client when connecting to PS3? Thank you for any assistance and have a good day. Mystt PS. To satisfy my own curiosity I gonna plug in the original HDD to see if that made any difference. It shouldn't and I expect the outcome to remain the same. However, if it does change, that makes for peculiar circumstances. I shall post my results ASAP. As I thought, the speeds are still 112kbps max no matter how big the file size. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again, Last edited by Mystt; 01-26-2011 at 04:22 PM. |

So are you saying this is just temporary? I was about to order in some Cat 6 cables to see if it would be any better. Thank you for responding.

I get 20mb/s on my normal LAN cable. Is your PC slow or doing other things? For example, if I am extracting a .rar file, my speed drops dramatically.

I have this problem too, I have used 4 different PS3's to transfer backups with, my 60gb CECHA maxes out at about 2-4mb and so does my other CECHG, my friends 2 PS3's get about 20mb transfer speed and his are CECHP and a slim, so they definitely changed the network adapter in the later models, all four of these were done on the same router and PC and FTP client.

I have the fat 80GB model. I get 25MB/s upload to the PS3.
Try updating your NIC drivers? Are you using store bought or custom clipped cables? how long are the cables? are they wrapped around in bundles, pinched in certain areas? I would try a different cable. monoprice.com never fails. other than that...try the new hdd in your pc and transfer between hdds within that pc. try flashfxp thats all i can think of. good luck to you. |

I had a similar problem in the past when I had my laptop connected directly to the PS3 -- I was maxing out at around 30KB/s and it was driving me nuts because it made no sense (I tried it with a patch cable and a crossover cable, both cat5e with a 10/100 nic -- multiple ftp clients with blackbox)
I then reconfigured my network -- ran a wire to a netgear gigabit switch and tried it with another machine that had a 10/100/1000. Transfers magically went up to average around 40MB/s using filezilla. I don't know why the slowness ever existed... the change in setup magically fixed it. |

well my pc makes no difference, neither does the ftp client (PC side). It's all about the model of the PS3, and if there is an update for the NIC on the PS3 I'd sure like to find it. I have a launch model 60gb, and a slightly later FAT, both are slow 2mb/s. using the EXACT same setup just swapping ps3's to my friends later models we get 20mb/s. and it makes no difference, I've tried store bought standard and crossover, and wireless, all same exact result
