You can find the readme below, download link on bottom of page:
Introduction
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open PS2 Loader is a 100% Open source game loader compatible with
USB Advance/Extreme game format. It's more compatible and it should work
without ps2load or change DNASXXX.IMG tricks.

Open PS2 Loader also is developed continuously and anyone can contribute
improvements to the project.

The main objective is to support both the PS2 and the PS3 with backward
compatibility.

There are compatibility lists in the project repository:
http://bitbucket.org/ifcaro/open-ps2...iki/USB-Compat
http://bitbucket.org/ifcaro/open-ps2...iki/SMB-Compat

How to use
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, you need an USB device compatible with PS2/PS3 formatted in FAT32
(only if you want to load games from USB).
For loading games by SMB protocol you need to share a folder called PS2SMB
(it can be changed) make sure that it has permissions for anyone to access.
The games have to be in USB Advance/Extreme format. There are some programs
for converting games to this format. Open PS2 Loader includes an command line
tool for that purpose called iso2usbld.

Other utilities are: USBUtil 2.0, USB Extreme installer or USB Insane.

In PS2 you can use any of the existing methods for loading an executable elf.

In PS3 you need to have an original SwapMagic 3.6+ or 3.8 (at the moment
there aren't any other option).

The steps for loading Open PS2 Loader in a PS3 are:

1. Rename OpenPS2LD.ELF to SMBOOT0.ELF
2. Make a folder in root of USB device called SWAPMAGIC and copy
SMBOOT0.ELF to it.
3. Launch SwapMagic in PS3 and press UP+L1 then Open PS2 Loader should
start.

There are 4 forms for launching elfs in SwapMagic.

SMBOOT0.ELF = UP + L1
SMBOOT1.ELF = UP + L2
SMBOOT2.ELF = UP + R1
SMBOOT3.ELF = UP + R2

Tutorial on how to use can be found here.

does that mean that the PS3s with software emulation can now play PS2 games using the Swap Magic Trick?

Exclamation For those noobs out there!

Ok simply this is a USB Loader, it can only load PS2 ISO's using SWAPMAGIC 3.6+ or 3.8, PAL or NTSC (has to match the console you own) and either Emulation or EE+GS so hears how to do it in full

1. Get a PS3 that can play PS2 games (20GB, 60GB 80GB(before MGS4 pack))
2. Get a USB device that is USB 1.1 compatible (PSP, FLASH STICK and some external hard drives, I use a Western Digital Elements 1.5tb) and make sure it is FAT32 not NTFS
3. get a copy of Swap Magic 3.6+ or 3.8, I use 3.6+ 'cause its easier
4. Get a 2 game, not a 1 or a 3 game but a PS2 game!!!
5. Dump an ISO
6. download the pack (should come with USBUtil) if not download it.
then make the directories like followed

USB\
SWAPMAGIC\
SMBOOT0.ELF (the renamed version of the .elf included)
USBUtil\
USBUTIL.EXE

7. now run USBUtil and click Add ISO
8. Find the ISO and point it to the root (the top) of the USB device, cannot be in a folder
9. Convert and etc.
10. plug USB into Ps3
11. insert Swap magic
12. wait till u get to the main screen (should say Load Program and Video)
13. Hold Up then press L1
14. Wait until it loads...
15. Run the game you want!

if any errors redo, if they persist the USB device probably inst compatible

Im running some games at the moment, some that did work dont, with Growslander all i get is USB, on the starting screen and well, thats it. Copying some more games and trying them out (shadow hearts 2). So far Legia 2 works from what i can see. As 0.5 can boot games from SMB now, does that mean it will eliminate the slow usb we had before?

As long as the PS3 is backwards compatiable, then yes.

Interesting, I'm hoping that Sony will release a firmware that can enable backward compatibility for the PS3 so that I can use this PS2 loader.

It would be kind of unfair of Sony to do such a thing, because a lot of ppl payed more money for their PS3's (like myself) just to have BC. But still, it IS stupid that new PS3's don't have it... They should have it by default.
And if anyone makes this loader work over network, please share your knowledge! I am dying to make that thing work...
