PS3 Cooling Fan Mod (First Ever??)

What up guys. I'm new here but figured I would find a site to post up something I've been working on for the last few days, but before I get to that I'm gonna give a little info on what made me do this.

I'm sure everyone here is aware of the YLOD and what not so what I decided to do was throw out the original PS3 cooling system and make my own. I got this idea about 7 months ago, attempted it but never finished it because I couldn't figure out a way to mount the fans. Then about 2 months ago, while I was helping a friend find a CPU fan for his pc, the idea hit me again and I threw out my original plans. This time my plan revolved around using 2 Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus cooling fans (one for cell and one for RSX). I thought about it for about a month and then last week I finally decided to order the fans. I received the fans Wednesday and finished with the fab work & wiring on Thursday. Did a test run and the PS3 wasn't receiving any type of power (red light wasn't even on). That didn't exactly surprise me because I had it apart and laying on my desk for 7 months with screws laying on top of it and other things. Anyway, I had another PS3 laying around that had suffered from YLOD and just transferred all it's hardware into the case of my PS3. Made sure everything was fitting right and powered her right up. So, without any more reading here's some pictures of what I've done.

I've got this wired to a fan controller so I can adjust the speed of each fan, but I think I'm just gonna leave them running at full speed :P

Hope you guys like it and let me know what you think.

I don't have the actual fans installed in these pictures because I thought the bolts were too long so I didn't even bother to test fit them.

More Pictures!! :D

How did you fit the heatsinks on?

there must of been some sort of mod there as there is only 2 holes for screws

I have a single mounting plate which fits under both heatsinks and mounts to the existing holes in the PS3. So it's really being held on by 4 bolts instead of 2. I'll take some more pictures tomorrow, though. Not sure why I didn't take more than what I did lol.

I am pretty sure this cooling is still not sufficient, cooling of just the CPU and gpu is not enough there still various other components that are essential to cool otherwise it will overheat after a few hours.

When you cut out the ps3 mobo metal cage and the plastic you essentially destroyed the cool airflow which cooled important components on ps3 mobo ( and if they overheat your ps3 shutdown).

The stock ps3 is actually very well designed, your only solution is to now place independent fans on those essential components to cool the ps3.

As for how he mounted the heat sinks it seems that the soldered the harness together and just used the right size nut and bolt to hold the sinks in place.

i thought as much.

but with the stock heatsink out of there it would free up alot of space to fit in a few small fans

Yuup. After I made my video I left it on while I played GT5 on my other PS3. About 5-6 hours passed and the PS3 shut down. Freaked me out so I touched the side of the PS3 and it was burning up. I now have a Nyko Intercooler I had lying around hooked up to the PS3 and decided to reverse the fans so they're blowing cool air in, so maybe that will help out some until I can think of another solution.

I'm enjoying it, though. I installed Kmeaw 3.55 CFW & SNESx9 today and I'm having so much fun playing SNES games again. Might grab a 500gb external hdd later so I can backup some games and what not. Quick question, how do I copy my roms from my psp to my hd on the PS3. All the videos I've seen people are playing them straight from an external source and not from the internal. I have rogero but I'm not sure how to copy from the psp with it, if I even can.

One more question. Is there any possibility of anything being released which would allow you to deactivate PS3 systems on your account? I know for a fact that I have 1 PS3 that was sent in to Sony and one which I probably fried in my first attempt in doing this mod (won't power on) that are still activated and it would be nice to get those deactivated. It took 6 months to convince Sony to deactivate my first ylod PS3.

Thanks for the input.

Edit: The airflow is amazing. I sit about 7-10ft away and can feel the air coming from the fans lol.
