Dizzy,
I hope you realize that the PS3 uses a CELL broadband processor, PowerPC is manufactured my Motorola, not IBM. The PowerPC processors were mainly used in the old g4/early G5 Apple machines before they switched over to Intel processors. OtherOS was placed in PS3 for tax purposes to lower the cost of the inital fat processors so Sony could get a import tax break by not classifying them as consoles. With the removal of OtherOS they are not considered Computer Systems anymore, yet they still get the break unlike Microsoft or Nintendo due to the classification not being revoked. IBM allowed Sony to add in OtherOS for Military usage as long as they did not use the full potential of the Processor. When the usage of the full processor was obtained by the mention of possible custom firmware by GeoHot, it was immediately removed. This was because if the information was leaked and Custom Firmware prevailed, it would be a breach of contract between Sony and IBM. Sony knew well before CFW that thier system was not secure if someone made CFW. Thus the multitude of FW updates to close the hole. If the system was closed again completely, no need to take down the PSN for a complete overhaul, this could be implemented with newer firmwares as needed. Alas with the lawsuits and things getting out about the GeoHot case and security issues arrise within the case. It was sealed on both parties to keep it from getting out to the media that Sony did not secure the system how it should have with the CC numbers..etc. Along with the OtherOS removal, Sony also needed to notify the users that OtherOS will be removed in future updates, per computer update regulations. They did this with 3.21, giving the user the choice. They did not however state this if you jump over that particular revision. They did however state that features may not function (not stated they will be removed) in future revisions. all they needed to do was post a disclaimer when you click on OtherOS, (disabled in fw 3.21) instead of removing the option. Then turn off the feature without removing from the system. Technically then they would comply with the EULA, and computer regulations since they still classify the PS3 as a computer. Could things have been done differently, sure. Hindsight is 20/20. Could they bring back OtherOS, definitely with newer OFW. Could they sucure it better as well, definitely so. Have one crew work on PSN, have one work on the console. Have another crew work on the interoperatability of them meshing together. This way you have a solid PSN, a solid system, and working knowledge of how to mesh them together with a team that makes em work solid together. (possibly purpose the guy back to OtherOS as well, which maybe a subdivision of the Console team...it would make lots of people happy, users and others too. You could just say...we got it to be secure. ...lame but still a reason to be able to bring it back for tax purposes and justification for both) I know a multi-billion dollar company can come up with this simple solution. Dont sue people, just find out what they did, and make a better product. You catch more flys with honey than vinegar. Last edited by Kondor1; 04-27-2011 at 10:28 AM. |

Great news :0)
I think all this hacking attention to SONY is fantastic (no sarcasm)! For Over 6 months now SONY have fallen hugely out of my favour and personally I hope these hacking attacks do not stop. I would ultimately like to see third party developers pull out of porting any software to the PSN, PS3, PSP or NGP. SONY have had this coming for ages they should stop passing the buck. All of this is of their own making. They lorded it over other games console makers, Big N and M but when security vulnrabilities are found in their own firmware they cry and whine like little b*****s. I think that all the personal information that has been compromised is totally safe from threat and would bet that it was just a stunt to expose SONY systems as unsecure (surely SONY are guilty by Data Protection Legislation for not securing protected personal data). Any hacker that would use that information for profit should be stoned to death with cow poo. But regardless of that I hope SONY crash and burn. Also hope 3DS pi***s on NGP sales :0).
