Just because data is "encrypted", does not mean it's safe...
Where are the keys stored? How is the data used? If you ever want to be able to retrieve the data (eg to use it) then you must have the key, perhaps the data was encrypted and whoever broke in was able to steal the keys as well?

I have seen MANY implementations where some or other security standard says that data should be encrypted, so they store it on an encrypted filesystem which is currently mounted (therefore the key is already in memory) and often configure the system to store the key so it can reboot without a user having to manually re-enter the key. All this pretty much negates any benefit from having encryption at all, but is often enough to satisfy various security standards.

It may be just coincidence but almost £2000 was fleeced from my bank account also in february by a dodgy amazon seller using my amazon details, they ordered cheap iphone cases from their store (in germany) at greatly inflated prices (i think it was for about 10 cases lol!), I never recieved anything so am sure it was the store owners (which i informed amazon of) who promptly ceased trading after the scam, the similarity is that stupid me used the same email/password combo for amazon as for PSN, for those who don't know Amazon store you card details for one click ordering so all you need is to login and order.

Now it may be a coincidence but either way someone somewhere had access to that unique email/password combo that i stupidly used (I have changed it now) only on amazon, ebay and PSN, because i trusted their security.

Moral of the story, change any accounts you use with the same email/paswword combo. Luckily my bank refunded the money.

Some people might not think that this post is important, but this is a very KEY PIECE of evidence, if and when, becuz its GONNA happen, a lawsuit is filed towards sony, that we can use towards raping sonys ass!!! Thank you for reporting this and doing all the work in researching this. MUCH THANKS AND PROPS!!! i dont think i ever wanna use my ps3 again, as sad as that is, i feel such and invasion of privacy now, i knew that they could tell what kind of tv and usb devices, and have chat logs, yada yada yada, but for some reason, now more than before my privacy has really been called into question. I think im gonna sell my ****. Isnt that F#$#d up? where a company screws up soooo bad that a customer will SELL their console. SONY PAY ATTENTION MAN.

This is why I hate sony's management

For all you who stick up for sony , wake the hell up
They are supposed to have a higher level of encryption for YOUR/MY personal info
They obviosly knew about this for a little while
They do not delete info and there has been no widespread emails or at least I have not recieved one. their actions state they couldn't care less about the consumer or the laws that pertain to the shady crap they've been doing for years
If they can get away with anything at all they will do it
Now watch the backpedal show as the authorities/public sector bring litigation
NOW YOU KNOW WHY THEY WANTED TO STOP JBCFW
WAKE UP
So go cancel those cards and get new ones today
The second my bank sniffs an intrusion EVERYONE is notified
Sorry for all the yelling but I needed to get it out
SONY just like massengill but douchier
Rant over
