There wasn't any markup on launch, they were sold at a loss. It was new tech and the price reflected this.

CELL was a new chip that hadn't been in production long.
Blu-Ray lasers again hadn't been on the market for a very long time.
RAM was expensive (especially given it's high speed RAMBUS stuff).

The PS4 will probably be slightly cheaper at launch though I expect.

What I'd like/expect to see:

CELL, die shrunk further (optimized cache too maybe?) and clocked higher.
2/4GB system RAM, 1/2GB VRAM
NVIDIA GTX 580 derivative.

They could essentially modifiy the current system architecture to support the upgrades. Would help with BC and as parts would essentially work the same it would be a lot cheaper than a complete redev.

This may sound like an odd thing to say but I actually LIKE my PS3, thats why I have one. I also have 4 xbox 360s, in various stages of repair/mod etc which I dont use. So yeah I like my PS3 because as an overall system, for me, its superior to the 360 (I dont just play games).

The security of the PS3 was superb, as you all know, for a long time until an employee (or someone close to Sony) sold/lost that initial developers dongle. So though the security now is falling faster than a $5 prostitutes knickers I still think they did a good job, initially.

A lot of people say about Linux and homebrew, I totally understand the feeling of theft concerning the OtherOS aspect, though I never used it, but to compare too the 360 which to my knowledge has none of these options seems a tad unfair.

I agree the PS3 was overpriced at launch, but it contained a lot of brand new technology (and lets also compare that to the 360, it was cheaper and a pile or RROD s**t tbf, which only really changed with the launch of the newest models).

And then people scream about security, yes its an epic fail by Sony to keep things secure but why is it now wide open? Oh yes hackers. What did the hackers do, oh yes CFW. So to have CFW, for what ever reason, seems to be the reason the security lacks so it seems a tad odd to complain about security when people with CFW are the reason. The logic seems flawed to me.

I've always liked Sony, theyve bought me more fun times than M$ ever has. Yes Sony have taken a bit of a totalitarian attitude towards the security of there system regarding hackers, but considering whats going on, the loss of revenue, and the security issues would you rather they just shruged and left us all too suffer at hands of hackers who know more than us...it seems an odd situation to me.

I hope Sony survives, and I hope they produce a good PS4 for one last reason that has no connection to the above statements - COMPETITION. M$ and Nintendo wont try as hard if the competition falls away, technically the PS3 is better than wii and 360 in my opinion so the next gens will try to push to be better....competition is good.

Sony will be along way off finalising any spec or design for PS4, its PR timing. E3 is just over a week away and Nintendo will be showing project cafe. This story just takes the wind out of Wii2 hype and puts Sony back on the front page.

I would expect from sony and psx if i buy the f**king game to be able to play it off line &online whithout having to update the f**king firmwares. Also an upgradable ram wise psx would be interesting. And i'd like to sony cut the "war against piracy" crap.psx exists today because of "piracy". Anyone not admiting this is obvously at least missinformed.
Ps3 could be the amiga of this era if only had not stupid limitations and if sony was not adding more "security -wise" limitations.The fools had the best card on hand and they burn it.the're idiots.
