5400RPM or 7200RPM for HDD upgrade?

Hi all,

So been considering upgrading the HDD in my PS3 as it is easier to store everything internally on the PS3.

So came across a 1TB 2.5", 5400RPM (9.5mm) and a 750GB 2.5", 7200RPM (9.5mm)...

Now I am wondering whether it would be worth while going for the smaller, yet faster HDD? Or is there some limiting factor with the speed the PS3 will read / write data to and from the HDD at, in which case I will rather go for the slower 1TB drive.

Here are links to the HDD's (Assuming it will be alright if I post links?)

1TB 5400RPM

750GB 7200RPM

Thanks,
Psy

My experience has only been with the Scorpio Black model you have linked. That is the drive I just installed this past Sunday and am very happy with it so far. I'm on Rogero 4.30cfw v2.03 and have not experienced any speed issues at all. Also, with the PS3 being on for about 6 hours straight, I pulled the drive caddy after shutting down the PS3 and it was barely warm to the touch. So high heat won't be an issue.

On the speed advantage over the 5400rpm drive, I recall a while ago some tests being done with GT5 loaded on both drives internally and there being a slight speed advantage with the 7200rpm drive. Now I don't recall what brand of drives they were testing so this seems to be a rpm advantage generally. Try googling it to find out more.

Personally speaking, I was using a 1TB drive as my internal drive before I got this Scorpio Black 750GB drive. I figured get as big a drive as would work. And honestly, with all my game backups, game updates, emulators and roms, I still had a ton of space left over. So I had no qualms about sacrificing some hdd space. Just my experience (and opinion).

5400 rpm is the only solution. even if you buy a 7200 rpm hdd it will function like a 5400 rpm on your ps3, so is no reason to spend more money.

ps3 only supports 5400 rpm so that is a statement made from someone that knows about ps3 less than you

im not so sure about that. 1tb sucks because they are to big and fragile(expecially wd). i would go for 750 gb and some brand like Hitachi (Seagate&Samsung are not bad too). i got my seagate 500gb still running after a year not like my wd 1tb that broke down after 3 months. anyway just dont buy Toshiba (a friend advise).

Alright, thanks. I will most likely go for the 1TB WD drive then.

I personally dislike Seagate / Samsung and would rather go for a WD

I certainly would not want to pass on wrong information to someone deciding on what hard drive to purchase. And if that's the case and a 7200rpm drive will function as a 5400rpm drive, then thanks for informing me. However, your way of stating it does border on the insulting.

Not trying to start anything here but just letting you know how you came across.
