Any ideas ? Cooling.

Ok so this is my problem.
I've recently moved the ps3, pc, sky hd into a cupboard which has no ventilation at the moment other than leaving the door open slightly. I'm looking at venting it. However what would you suggest. I've got vents ready to be fitted in the doors and one in ceiling and one in rear wall.

if its in a confined space then you could mcguyver some sort of ducting
one fan fed intake gouing to the front of the console and one fan pulled exhaust at the back.

any way you do this isnt going to be reliable though. heat generated will build up eventually

It all depends on how your PS3 is going to sit in the cupboard. If it's lying down, you'd want horizontal vents going across the front, back and right sides of the cupboard, as well as the top. That'll allow the intake+exhaust to continue unhindered, and will also prevent any heat from building up in the cupboard itself, and it'll also allow hot air to take a 2nd route out of the enclosed space.

If you have it standing on the other hand, you'd want vertical ventilation instead of horizontal, but you'd still want the vents on the front, back, and top of your cupboard. The vents on the right of the cupboard wouldn't be required for the standing PS3 however, so that's an added bonus of standing the PS3 I suppose.

This is just basic info however, so if anyone wants to add on more info here, feel free. ^^

Edit - And like Japs said, if you can rig up a fan so it's continually sucking cool air in, or even better 2 of em (1 to push air out the other side), then you'll be golden.

Unless you are going to fit fans to each of the vents and make sure there is a constant pull through of air I would Really get the kit out of there.

Not so much the PS3 either as depending on what make your SkyHD box is, it Will fail if it gets too warm.

you want to suck the hot air out so one fan at the bottom blowing in and one at the top sucking out as hot air rises and cold air falls

Ok thanks guys. Those are along the lines of what I was thinking.

The temp in the cupboard is a constant 25deg celsius is this too hot ?

On the fans what type would I be looking for ? Standard extractors ? That's where I'm stuck.

Look up killerbig's fan controller. Also I would really suggest getting it out of the drawer. It doesn't matter how warm the cabinet is but the ps3's internal temperature will continue to rise causing overheating and eventually the YLoD. By keeping it in a confined space think as though you are keeping it in an oven. Japsander had the best idea but that isn't 100% effective as he also stated. You really want the ps3 out of that confined space especially with a pc and another box in there. You could eventually have one big electronics fail.

Thanks for that answer.

The pc is a water cooled system, and on taking my sky box apart there seems to be enough space to do that in there too.

The cupboard itself is actually 2m x 1m x 1m so in itself is pretty big, killerbugs fan controller looks a good option.

I've today installed an extra 2 vents and a duct running from outside drawing air in to it with a fan and I think I'm going to add another fan to expel the warm air again to outside the house.

Thanks for such an informative answer.
